Pre-reading this exquisite novel Muse by Mary Novik
set in fourteenth-century Avignon, France, is best said as the characters (Petrarch, his brother Gherardo, Laura, Solange, Clement VI, and innumerable others) of the tumultuous beginnings of the fourteenth-century Renaissance are absorbing my attention.

The novel's characters, including Petrarch, his brother Gherardo, Laura, and Clement VI are historical figures, and the setting and events as they happen with artfulness of course. Interestingly, Petrarch's poetry of fourteenth-century France initially inspires poets of the sixteenth-century Spanish Renaissance (
Orphans of Petrarch: Poetry and Theory in the Spanish Renaissance
).
