Sarah (lesmisarahbles) | 10 comments I'm starting a book based around what I found out to be a dystopia. Basically, a future Earth controlled by those who use mind-control through music. Think Voodoo Nazis.

Anyways, I would like to go about this the right way. I want it to seem like it very well could happen. For example, their coming to power, how "mind-control" works, etc. If you have any websites, books, or other materials that could help me get a better grasp on the subject it would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry, but this is the first time that I've heard of that concept... it sounds interesting though! Good luck with your story!

Rita Webb (ritawebb) Try 1984 by George Orwell. That's probably the best place to start.

Cory Doctorow recently wrote a book called Little Brother, where San Francisco is put under military rule. I'm reading it now, so I can't say much about it yet. But I've heard good things about it.

My sci-fi stories are a bit of a distopia. Well, actually, they are breaking out of a distopian society and there is some reference to what happened on the planet before they escaped. The first book (novella, just 4 chapters) is entirely on Goodreads. http://www.goodreads.com/story/show/4...

Just Plain Ray (Ray_of_Sunshine) | 2557 comments Ooh, I love Cory Doctorow. I only read one book by him (Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town) but it was awesome :D

Rita Webb (ritawebb) I recommended Little Brother, having just started it. Now being mostly through Little Brother by Cory Doctorow, I highly, highly, highly recommend it for your research.

But the movie Gattaca is another good choice. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119177/

And Nazi Germany was a real-life distopia, which is something else you may want to research.

Different distopias have different driving agendas. No, agenda isn't the word. Maybe means of control. But the common thread is control. No free thought. No individualism. No privacy.

Christy Stewart (christyleighstewart) I think it would be most important to get some 101 books on magic. Most authors want to write about voodoo but don't know the first thing about magic in general.

Konstantinos is a good beginner author if you're not interested in the Wiccan scene.

Paige Miller | 4362 comments I recommend learning about both real life distopias and the general theories on magic.

Liriope | 12 comments Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley is a really good Dystopia novel. I suppose you could read about Communism in general as well.

I think there's a list or 2 on here (Goodreads) listing best Dystopia novels.
