Jim | 22 comments It isn't going to make any top 50 but I'd recommend THE PIRATES OF ERSATZ by Murray Leinster
It's free from http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/24035

It's classic 1950s SF, Appeared in three consecutive issues of Astounding Science Fiction, and is about 60K works. I loved it, such a change from the modern stuff :-)

If you get it, get the version with the images :-)

Steve Joyce (stevejoyce) | 18 comments Thanks for the heads up. The price is right (wink, nod) and I just added into the queue. Read Leinster's The Forgotten Planet eons ago and from what I recall it was pretty darn good too.

Leinster's short "“First Contact”" is in the SFWA's The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume 1. It features a universal translator as a plot device to facilitate comm between alien species. There must be an online version available somewhere.

Steve Joyce (stevejoyce) | 18 comments Ah yes.
I remember The Science Fiction Hall of Fame Vol 1.
It was on the reading list for a S.F. Lit course that I took way back in the 70s. Lots of great short stories as I recall.

Dan I remember reading "First Contact" in my pre-teen years back in the mid-1970s. There were a lot of truly excellent stories in the Hall of Fame anthology. This is not one. Here is the text so you can draw your own conclusion: http://thevirtualcommunity.yuku.com/t...
