Werner | 950 comments Since I've already read The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I voted for it, on the theory that if it wins, I remember it well enough to take part in the discussion even if I do have other reading commitments. Hope that's all right!

message 12: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Okay awesome Werner. That's totally fine. :)

message 13: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Remember we only have a few more days to vote for our next group read which will last from September to October so voting ends on the 31st. so far two are tied up for first place with 5 votes apiece so if we have a tie, we'll move one to be Novembers group read or move it back into the poll for November and December's group read.

Werner | 950 comments Since our group exists to encourage the reading of classic books, with Rosemarie's permission, I've created a thread, here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... , where we can each keep track of the classics we read this year. We're not competing against each other; but I think it will be fun, at this time next year, to see how many total classics we've read as a group. (And, if everybody's pleased with the idea this year, perhaps we'll do it again in 2026! :-) )

Werner | 950 comments The mod of another group I'm in posted this heads-up about a Goodreads-related scam that's going around, and gave me permission to copy-and-paste it in other groups.

We’ve been made aware that someone has created one or more fake Gmail addresses impersonating moderators and is sending emails claiming to be connected to various GR groups, and asking for money. This is SPAM.

This has been increasing in activity lately, and many different GR groups are having the problem.

Please note: The moderators will not contact you by email. We don’t have your email addresses, and all our communication takes place through Goodreads.

If you receive an email purporting to be from our moderators:
◆ Do not reply. Do not click links or open any attachments.
◆ Do not share personal information (address, phone number, passwords, payment info, etc.).
◆ Report it to your email provider as phishing, or at least as spam.

One precaution you may wish to take is to ensure that your email address isn’t widely shared on GoodReads:
◆ Do not post it publicly, even in forms such as ‘address at gmail dot com’
◆ Look at your profile settings.
Specifically, see the options:
⬦ “Make my email address visible to:”
(recommendation: No one)
⬦ “Allow Goodreads members to search for me by email”
(recommendation: unchecked)
This may help prevent scammers’ ability to approach you via email.

If you have any questions, feel free to reply here.

Remember: It is dangerous to post your e-mail or phone number in public posts.

NOTE: This appears to have been mainly directed to authors and trying to get them to pay to have their book highlighted in a discussion. That is a SCAM. We would never charge for a BOTM/Group Read.

Werner | 950 comments Earlier this month, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne won the poll to become the book for our group's annual common read, starting Sept. 1. Sorry for the late notice; I was distracted by other matters, and it slipped my mind. :-(

Rosemarie | 201 comments Mod
Thanks, Werner, for the timely reminder.
I also sent a message to all our members in mid-month.

message 24: by Werner (new)

Werner | 950 comments Yes, Rosemarie, I remember now that you did (I read it at the time!). Thanks! Looking forward to the discussion. :-)
