I love how when I first read this book (I have no recollection of reading it so I won't have any spidey senses or much of past reading experiences to share), I definitely didn't know who Herman Melville was haha. I will never get over the little "Easter eggs" for older readers.

At first I liked Captain Widdershins, but then I got tired of his attitude. The contradictory orders sounded so real though, I could imagine someone actually talking like that and acting like everything is their idea. Maybe because I know people like that, I don't like the attitude?

I do love Fiona though, she's so straightforward. There are so few characters who just say it like it is in this series. It's a relief she's here with Captain Widdershins, otherwise I would be driven crazy with not knowing withheld information.

And am I the only one loving that Sunny isn't known just for her teeth, but for a skill like her siblings? Cooking is awesome.

I feel bad I almost forgot who Phil was... I really like the recycled characters idea, especially from the way early books. So fun to see them again. You can really tell Lemony Snicket cares about and keeps in mind all of his characters.

Speaking of Lemony Snicket, I wonder why he hasn't mentioned as the narrator anything about working on the Queequeg... Perhaps later?
