I don't know a date, but this interview with CRZ from 18 months ago might whet your appetite. According to him, there's definitely a fourth book coming.

I saw him in a Q&A session in a festival here in Sydney about 6 months ago and he wouldn't say anything about the specific date, only that he hadn't finished writing it, that he wanted it to be the best of the four and that it would be published in 2014. I didn't expect his English to be that good actually, he's incredibly articulate in both languages.
Monica,
Have you read Marina? It came out in English recently. That might hold you over. I don't think we can hold writers to a schedule. The muse takes hold when she does.

Monica,
Marina is very good: romantic, gothic, and beautiful with some horror elements at the end. it's a story that's stuck in my mind and I want to reread it. And of course, it takes place in Barcelona.

He did say that there is a fouth book coming which will make sense out of the loose ends and complete the cycle, but as months come and go I've lost hope. Probably not going to be published this year. He's working on parallel projects too apparently. Oh well... Marina is nice, same writing style but it's a young adult novel and it left me a bit unsatisfied.
Monica,
I read Marina a few years ago in Spanish and really enjoyed it. I thought it was very romantic, gothic, and mysterious. I am not a horror fan either and didn't particularly care for those aspects of it, but it didn't detract from the rest of the story for me.
I, too, am anxiously awaiting CRZ's next book. In the meantime, so much other stuff to read.

Monica,
I can't recommend anything on par with SotW. Time in Between by Maria Duenas was another good Spanish novel, but not as good as SotW, IMO. There are many other books I've liked recently, but of different genres.

Monica wrote: "Is Marina anywhere near the same quality of writing? I know all about those evil muses who come and go as they please, leaving us readers and writers in the dumps at times. But I just wish someone ..."Indeed it is. Scary too, kept me looking over my shoulder at home for a few days. Very good.
I lived in Barcelona at various times over the last 35 years. Marina (and indeed, CRZ's other novels) describe some places I know very well. He puts real places into his novels giving them a real sense of place in Barcelona.
I also posted the same question in TSOTW discussion forum.I am sure there will be a 4th book. Don't forget that he writes in Spanish, and the books also have to be translated.
Have a few 'ideas' of my own as to what may crop up. Anyone up for discussions?
Sue,
I'm up for it. What are your ideas?

I posted a fairly long(!) discourse under SOTW's discussion, but.....here's a short version. We all know Valls was a main villain in POH; if I am not mistaken, his sister was mentioned in SOTW---She took piano lessons from Julian's mom.
While re-reading POH, noted on p. 68 (I think....) that Val's was an errand boy/secretary for the rival of David Martin's boss. Hmmm! And remember he was always wanting info on the Cemetary of Lost Books?
Not sure here, but what about Armando the Gypsy? He who also escaped from Montjuic? Did all those crosses in Fermin's cell? And remember the mention of crosses in the one bedroom where Julian grew up? An allusion to heaven?
These are some things I noticed. Suppose I've read books 1 and 3 so many times, and should re-read Angels Game.
Enough for now.....
Sue,
Thanks. I'll look up your other comments. I've only read POH once; need to read it again. Have read the other 2 twice each. I liked Angel's Game better the second time. So, your details from POH don't immediately come to mind. You've inspired me to read it again soon.
To me, POH seemed like a transitional book; there to fill in some gaps and lead to the next one. I know CRZ said you can read them in any order, but I read them as they were released.

Thanks, Badger! Somehow, while reading SOTW, I became so engrossed in the story, I re-read it within a week of finishing it. Yes, I thought it was that good, with the different 'versions' of what each person saw, as pertaining to Julian's story. However, it was during the 2nd reading that I noticed some of the things that made me wonder. Yes, POH does seem transitional. Just got back from B&N, but did NOT attempt to read Angel's Game tonight.
The first time I read SotW, when I finished the last page, I had the urge to turn back to page 1 and start over again...immediately. I can't remember when, if ever, I've had that feeling upon finishing a book.

I read somewhere that Zafon was thinking to the perspective of writing the 4th book if he has time , but nothing is certain.
I did a search within the last week or so, and nothing has been posted--yet. However, I am sure he is tweaking things as he writes. Am sure he doesn't want to let us down.
Did read that he considers Marina as the 'transitional' book, where he left YA books, and geared toward Adults.
Sue,
See the separate thread about it here in this section.
