this one is a new release.
I haven't read it but it seems a mix between SF and UF, so maybe is a good one to start?
I love Maggie Stiefvater's Scorpio Races. It is listed as YA, but it is NOT a typical teenage book. It deals with the Celtic mythology of the water horses, and it is dark, eerie, and beautifully written. Very unusual. I also loved Miss Peregrine's Home for Unusual Children, by Ransom Riggs. Compellingly creepy story with really weird old photographs. It pulls you in. Brandon Sanderson's Alloy of Law can be read as a stand-alone. It is a sort of "sequel" to his Mistborn series, but in a different time, and I found that it worked fine for me, even though I hadn't read the earlier series. It's a bit sci-fi and steampunk-ish, though not quite either.Just a few thoughts off the top of my head.
That is a tough one. You could try the various anthologies though those can be hit and miss in quality. The only other suggestion would be books by Neil Gaiman - the majority are stand alones.
You might suggest:Gil's All Fright Diner by A. Lee Martinez
Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause
Throat by R.A. Nelson
