Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Seeking recommendations for stand alone urban fantasy books. As I am a fan of UF I try to convince others to give the genre a try. Well a friend who reads sci-fi is anti UF books because they are serials. To his credit he has read books like War of the Oaks and Neverwhere but he said he would give a book a try so long as it is a stand alone. So now I am stumped.

The only ones I can think of are Sunshine by Robin McKinley 14 by Peter Clines

But I have not read 14 yet and I do not think he will like Sunshine not enough action.

Can anyone think of something else?

Sonia (darktalynn) Maybe Neil Gaiman's books? Like The Graveyard Book

Will search some more.

Sonia (darktalynn) this one is a new release.
Something More Than Night by Ian Tregillis
I haven't read it but it seems a mix between SF and UF, so maybe is a good one to start?

Marcia (marciameara) | 161 comments I love Maggie Stiefvater's Scorpio Races. It is listed as YA, but it is NOT a typical teenage book. It deals with the Celtic mythology of the water horses, and it is dark, eerie, and beautifully written. Very unusual. I also loved Miss Peregrine's Home for Unusual Children, by Ransom Riggs. Compellingly creepy story with really weird old photographs. It pulls you in. Brandon Sanderson's Alloy of Law can be read as a stand-alone. It is a sort of "sequel" to his Mistborn series, but in a different time, and I found that it worked fine for me, even though I hadn't read the earlier series. It's a bit sci-fi and steampunk-ish, though not quite either.

Just a few thoughts off the top of my head.

Sara | 860 comments That is a tough one. You could try the various anthologies though those can be hit and miss in quality. The only other suggestion would be books by Neil Gaiman - the majority are stand alones.
