Has anyone tried these?
I saw them at barnes and noble a few weeks ago, and I wondered about them

For those of you who do not know what a Playaway is...Here is a link

new_user No point, unless you don't like your mp3 player's user interface *cough iTunes sucks cough* and want your books pre-loaded.

new_user Hm, no, I hadn't. Thanks for the link. I tried another iTunes alternative before with no success. But my biggest beef with iTunes is having to go through the program altogether. It'd be better if I could just transfer my music to the player as I would a flash drive, like some other mp3 players do. Monopoly to require users to to use proprietary software in order for their machines to function.

new_user LOL. Yeah, other players like the Sansa mp3 players work like USB disks. You just drag and drop music from your desktop, for example, to the virtual drive in the My Computer folder. You don't need any additional software for it to work. You don't have to open a program, find the song and save it to a "library" and then sync just to add a song.

This is a teeny tiny picture, but you can see what I mean:

LOL I love my Ipod. I really want to buy a Kindle though.
I thought it was strange when I saw this Playaway thing. I was like "what are we going back in time now?" I think that they are attempting to do that! LOL With the kindle, ebooks, and MP3 Players...I just don't see people going the Playaway route. Although, it might be nice for little kids who don't have MP3 players...

My 11 yr old sister in law already has an Ipod. LOL I'd be worried to spend a ton of money on an Ipod for a child, because they might wreck it... I am really surprised when I see elementary children with an Iphone! I don't even spend that kind of money on a phone for myself. LOL

See, now don't get me started about the kindle and not actually owning the ebooks one purchases through Amazon to put on said kindle =)

Teryl As for the play a way? I wouldn't use it because I like to listen to books during my long communte so headphones are out of the question.

Jackie (thenightowl) I didn't know playaways were available for public purchase. I've seen them at my library, which I can understand. Those few people who enjoy audios that don't have an MP3 player, like senior citizens or people without the means to buy one will find it handy. However, I agree from an environmental stand point and from a practical stand point this doesn't make much sense.

Yeah, that stops me from shelling out hundreds on one. LOL! I would love it for travel or even to purchase embarrassing romance books though. :-)

Michelle (shadowrose) Wow that playaway thing seems like a real waste of plastic to me, I mean what with audiobooks and mp3 files. I'm not a huge fan of audiobooks as it is ( I only use them on Shakespeare plays or books that can't hold my attention on paper). It's a cute idea for little kids but I think I would still prefer them to read the book instead.

I agree iPods are too expensive for little kids to have most of the time. I just bought my second one (1st one decided that it would become a rainbow of colors a week after the warrenty expired)and I wasn't too thrill shelling out $188 + for it but I really missed my old one.
