Not since Edgar Allen Poe's THE GOLD BUG has the cracking of a cryptogram played as critical role in the story as in the spy novel THE OLD SPOOK. The Playfair Square is the key. Check it out: The Old Spook

Okay but well..that story was 1843. How about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Homes in 'The Adventure of the Dancing Men', 1898?
