Symbolism of snow?
I viewed the snow as being the epitome of the US. Cold and isolating. At least compared to the DR.
It also symbolizes the unknown. Both because it is a new experience for the boys coming from the DR, but also because snow is a chance for exploration, to make new tracks. We see that despite the older brother's bravado and violence, he never is able to explore like Junior is, in the snow, or in his entire life.
