The Commander grew up with a female body, but always felt he was in the wrong body. It wasn't until Yelena told him that his mother's soul remained with him and was the reason for the female shape that he fully understood what's going on. I don't think he looked at it as a curse - he's very practical and accepted it. But once he learned about his dual nature, he sees it as an advantage...for now. He hasn't decided what to do about it :)

He can let his mother's soul "take over" and appear more feminine like when he traveled to Sitia disguised as Ambassador Singe.

True, and it would be a huge advantage for him as the Sitian Council would never see him coming. :-) i'm just thinking that should his mothers soul be released, then his body would become male?

Yes. I think that follows the logic for those who are transgendered like the Commander - his soul is male and his body is female - they don't match - and evicting his mom's soul is similar to getting a sex change operation.
