Tarren was waiting at surfers bend for Heidi. He had stuck his board in the sand about a foot away and was sitting with his knees drawn up watching the surf roll in. There were some nice sets coming in now and a few more way out. He couldn't wait for Heidi to get here so they could get in the water. The conditions were perfect, warm, not a cloud in the sky, no wind to make the surf choppy just steady rolling swells that were breaking at just the right spot to catch them and ride them in. He closed his eyes and let a slight breeze catch his hair and blow it around.
Heidi pulled up to Surfer's bend in her brother's loud, falling apart, old land cruisor. This car was Ryker's pride and joy...even if it barley made it a mile. But it was the only car they had that Heidi could fit her board in. She was so excited, but she was also nervous too. She looked a lot different than last night. She had practically no makeup on, since it was going to wash off anyway, and her hair was pulled back into a messy curly ponytail. Hopefully, he wouldn't run for the hills at the sight of her. She climbed out of her car, grabbed her board, and looked around for Tarren, her heart beating quickly. 'Where is he?' She thought, not seeing him.

Tarren heard a car door close and snapped his eyes open. He saw Heidi but her back was to him "Heidi!" He called. When she turned he waved her over with a grin. She looked even better now in the full sunlight than she had last night in the dim party. He hair was pulled back in a messy pony tail and her swimsuit was simple though he had to admit if he wasn't careful he might take a few dives off his board from watching her. The was the image of a surfer girl and he loved every bit of it. He was just wearing a pair of black swim trunks and a wet suit style black and blue shirt. He wasn't much for an excess of color.
Heidi smiled and waved, grabbing her towel, sunscreen and water bottle as well as board and walked over to Tarren. She was so excited. The waves were perfect, the weather was perfect...he was perfect. Nothing could ruin this day. She dropped her things down on the warm sand and sat next to Tarren, grinning. "Hey you! The water looks great." She took her sunscreen out and began applying it to her arms and legs. Her mom had had skin cancer a while ago, and was very very admit about her family using it. She didn't want anymore cancer...but it was to late. Heidi's dad had been diagnosed with a brain tumor a while ago. The rest of her family had flown into Boston for the day to get treatments for it.
"I know." Tarren said. "I've been down here watching them for awhile. The really big one tend to break right there." He pointed out and to the right a bit. Then he turned to her. "And speaking of great, you look great. I'm so happy to see you." He leaned over and gave her a kiss on the cheek as she applied sunscreen. He didn't normally put sunscreen on, he usually had enough of a tan that he didn't burn. It came from spending year round on the coast in Santa Cruz.
Heidi grinned. "Thanks Tarren. I'm glad to see you too." She said softly, giving him a peck on the cheek. Well, she was worried about nothing. Appearance wise because according to him she looked great...and his opinion was the only one that mattered right now. "You look pretty handsome too you know." Heidi said with a grin. She ment it too. It was hard not to stare. He had that golden California tan that Heidi had always wanted. But it was physically impossible. Heidi tanned enough that she didn't look pale, but she couldn't get dark either. She just burned.
Tarren glanced down at himself. "I'm pretty much wearing all black. But I guess if you like the surfer goth look." He joked with her. "Arianne's the colorful one, I suppose, not that I never wear color." Tarren wanted to shove his own hand in his mouth. Shut up. He thought to himself. "I'm babbling. Sorry about that." He gave her a sheepish smile. It wasn't like him to babble because it wasn't like him to get nervous. All of this felt new. He was normally so self assured. He mentally shrugged, he'd figure it out eventually.
Heidi smiled, and rubbed some sunscreen on her face, as Tarren spoke. She held in a laugh as he rambled on and on about his sister. "It's alright Tarren...I do it all the time. Plus, I find it cute." She said with a small wink. She wasn't sure if she got all the sunscreen rubbed in on her face though and looked to Tarren. She had missed some spots on her cheeks, forehead, and nose. "Did I get it all?"
"I think that's the first time anyone but my sister has called me cute." He said. "And I actually didn't mind." He added. Most girls called him hot not cute. But when Heidi said it he knew it was a term of endearment and he appreciated it. He looked at her face and tried not to smile more there were thick smudges still on her cheeks, forehead and nose he rubbed his thumb across her forehead and nose and then placed his hands on either side of her face and rubbed it into her cheeks, gently so as not to get it in her eyes. "There you go."
"No, I called your rambling cute. Your appearance is completely Hot. But your personality is sweet, and cute. A good combo." Heidi corrected him. Tarren had to get right if he was going to try to correct her. She said try because she normally was right. Even if she was wrong. She bit her lip as he reached over and rubbed the spots she had missed in. Her brain turned into mush and she couldn't think straight. It was almost as if every time he touched her she couldn't breath right, she got butterflies in her stomach. It wasn't normal. "Thanks." She said softly, smiling softly.
"Oh, well I guess that makes it even more okay." He said. At least it was a small ego boost that only his personality was cute. And that was a good combo according to Heidi, and hers was the only opinion that really mattered to him right now so he was okay. "Your welcome." He said softly back. The sunscreen was all rubbed in but he didn't move his hands from her face, just kept staring into her eyes. "You know if you keep looking at me with those big eyes I may never make it to the water." He told her. She was so beautiful.
Heidi blushed slightly, but didn't break eye contact. Her blue/green/gray eyes looked almost green thanks to her swimsuit. She stared there for a moment longer, before glancing back at the ocean, biting her lower lip. She bit her lip only when she was nervous, or making decisions. The ocean just seemed to be calling to her. The waves were perfect, but so was he. She looked back at Tarren. "Come on. I am so going to out surf you." She challenged teasingly. This was going to be fun.
Tarren sighed. He believed in her wholeheartedly but there was no way she was going to out surf him. "In you dreams gorgeous." He winked at her and stood, reaching for his board and pulling it out of the sand. He had grown up with one foot in the ocean at all times. His father had taught him and Arianne to surf before he taught them to walk, practically. Tarren always told Arianne that salt water ran in their veins which made it so the ocean could talk to them. It was a fun story when they were kids but even now there were times that they both almost believed it.
Heidi rolled her eyes. "You sure I'm the one dreaming Tarren? Because trust me. I am going to kick your butt." She grinned and grabbed her board as well, running out to the ocean. Ryker and her had spent countless hours as kids surfing. It was the only thing that got her mind off of her troubles. Heidi learned to surf when she was three, and hasn't stopped since. She would surf all day, and then go night surfing...almost all night. She practically lived in the ocean.

Tarren took off after her into the waves and quickly laid down on his board and began paddling out. He would let most of the swells roll under him but he duck dove under a few. When he came up from his first dive his hair was soaked, droplets running off his hair and into his eyes but he was grinning from ear to ear. There was nothing he loved more than a day of exhausting his muscles surfing then to stop, take a break, and go back out later that night to do it under the moonlight. That was Arianne's favorite time to surf but only for a little while. Then she would leave him and go sit alone farther down the beach to relax and he would keep going until he was exhausted. "Ready?" He asked Heidi as the first good wave came in that they could catch.
Heidi grinned and looked back at him. Since she had gotten a head start, she was ahead of him. "I was born ready!" She said as she started to paddle towards the wave. She stood, and made a victorious face at Tarren when she caught the wave. It was an amazing one. She surfed it with ease, doing all kinds of weird little tricks Ryker had taught her. She felt so free, and completely herself. She loved it.
Tarren watched her, shaking his head and smiling at her obvious delight. He had deliberately not gotten that wave but had chosen to wait for a bigger one he had noticed about to come in. He began paddling and got the wave right in the sweet spot. He stood and rode it, dipping in and out of the wave, sometimes closing his eyes for a brief moment and relishing that feeling of almost flying that you could only get from certain special activities like surfing.
Heidi's wave had long since ended, and she watched Tarren, unable to keep the smile off her face. She was waiting for a big wave, a good one. And she couldn't tear her eyes off of Tarren. He was so perfect. He was the perfect she had always wanted to be, but probably would never achieve it. "Way to go!" She shouted, sitting on her board, her legs in the water.
Tarren turned to her and saluted lightly. He then stood on the beach and watched, waiting for her to catch her next wave. It was hot today and the sun beat down already beginning to dry his skin and even his thermal shirt. He loved days like this. It was like everything was working in a surfer's favor to give them the perfect day and every good surfer knew that you had to take advantage of day like this when they came along.
Heidi reached out and pulled out her pony tail, letting her hair tumble out into soft waves down her back. She dipped her.fingers into the water, enjoying every minuet of their unofficial date. That's what she was calling this. Because it was just them, but they hadn't really called it a date. She watched the water, waiting for another good one, when finally, she saw it. It was a monster of a wave, waiting for her to take it. She was going to take it.
Tarren saw the wave and felt his own muscles tense as if he was the one about to catch it and not Heidi. He smiled as she let her hair down. He wanted to watch her ride this in because he had already seen that when she was on a wave she looked beyond happy. Like nothing else in the world could possibly bring her more joy and he wanted to be able to see all that from a perfect vantage point. He realized this wasn't a real date but he wanted to take her on one. That would come later though, soon but later.
Heidi caught the wave just at the right moment, dipping in and out of it. She felt like she was unstoppable. She felt like she was flying through the air, and the feeling was phenomenal..and she never wanted it to end, but sadly, it did. She walked out of the water, grinning. "That was wicked!" That was one of the best waves she had surfed in ages. Her hair was slightly damp, but still as curly as ever. She loved surfing, but she loved being with Tarren more. That's what she had learned over the past two days. His presence was the spark in her that ignited the feeling of freedom and importance. He was amazing...she hoped he saw that.
"That," Tarren said, walking down the beach to meet her. "Was hot." He told her. Before she could object he picked her up and swung her around in a circle, causing her to drop her board. "Did it feel amazing?" He asked. She had looked beyond blissful during that ride. He brushed a strand of damp hair behind her ear and looked down into her eyes.
Heidi laughed as he spun her around, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Beyond amazing." She looked up into his eyes, a smile glued on her face. She couldn't believe that wave, but that wasn't half as amazing as what was right in front of her. "But not as amazing as what I'm looking at right now." Heidi felt as if she was on top of the world, and no one could bring her down...not even if they tried. And she knew it wasn't because of the amazing wave she had just surfed..but the person she was with. That made all the difference.
"What I'm looking at right now is even better." He said quietly. "Heidi, you're practically glowing right now." He told her. Right then he felt like even if they never went back in the water and even if he didn't catch another wave that day it would be the best day spent surfing ever. He felt totally satisfied. He leaned down and kissed her slowly before pulling back. "Heidi, I was going to wait until later to ask but, do you want to go on a real date with me?" He asked.
Heidi blushed. "I don't know....you are pretty handsome Tarren. It's hard to beat that." She said softly, smirking. When he kissed her, Heidi almost immediately felt Sparks fly, she felt a connection that was even stronger than the one she had felt the night before. When he pulled back, she couldn't keep her smile back. "Is that even a question? Of course."
"Well I was hoping it wasn't going to be hard to answer." He smirked lightly at her. "If you had said no I think I might have had to hurl myself into the ocean from embarrassment having read you so wrong." He said, mostly honest. Rejection would definitely been hard because he liked her so much. He tightened his arms around her rubbing his thumbs over the exposed skin at the base of her shirt.
"Terran...I don't think I would have made you meet my brother, kissed you, and told you about my past...if I didn't like you." She whispered, reaching up and putting a hand to his cheek. "I'm pretty easy to read." Her breath caught in her throat as he rubbed circles on her waist. Why was it so easy for him to do this to her?
"I kinda figured but considering half my rational thought and most of my composure goes out the window when I see you." He paused to smile down at her as a way of showing her he meant it. "I was worried I could have grossly misread the situation." He continued to hold her, just loving to touch her and be close to her with no desire to go back in the water for the time being.
Heidi laughed. "Well, if it makes you feel better, my brain turns to mush every time you kiss me." She admitted, putting her arm back around his neck. She felt so safe in his arms. She could forget her worries..her dads cancer, college, work. It was all left behind. All that mattered was them. "Don't worry Tarren. You read me spot on." She whispered, smiling. She hadn't stopped since her fly here, and honestly she didn't think she would.
"Really?" He asked her a devilish grin on his face. "So when I do this." He leaned down and brushed a feather light kiss across her lips. "It effects you?" He asked, smiling against her lips. "Or this." He pressed his lips down on hers again. When he kissed her he felt the same way. Like rational thought was no longer needed to function. Neither was breathing or his heart beat because they all paused when he kissed her and it was the best feeling.
Heidi shook her head, holding her laugh in. he was totally going to use this information to his advantage. As he pressed his lips to hers the first time, she felt her heart flipflop, and she couldn't think straight...and that was at the first one. The second one however, she didn't even try to.think..she just let her body go on autopilot as she kissed him back, her eyes slowly slipping close. Heidi didn't care if they ever went back out...she just wanted to be with him.
Tarren kissed her and felt her skin under his fingers and when he finally was forced to pull away to breathe he was upset. "Good to know." He said, leaning his forehead against hers. "Cause I'm totally fine. No reaction at all." He smiled a smile that obviously said he was lying. They were so close she could probably feel how fast his heart was beating and it was totally obvious that he looked for any excuse to touch her. She was perfect and it was shocking how she didn't even notice.
Heidi smiled half way through the kiss. The way he made her feel was amazing. No one had made her feel like that before, and she loved that he was the one to do it. When he pulled back, she felt disappointed..and yet, satisfied. Her heart pounded in her chest, so hard, she was convinced he could hear it. When he said that he had no reaction, she laughed. "You are a dreadful liar." She said softly teasing him. Just by the look on his face she knew she had some affect on him. No matter how small it may be.
"Actually, with the rest of the world I'm a fantastic liar." Tarren grinned then frowned. "It's one of the reason's I'm so good at business. I'm manipulative when I need to be." He wasn't always proud of that but when he closed a good deal with his dad looking on approvingly it didn't matter how he had done it. He wasn't a cheat or anything, but still. His hold slipped and he looked ashamed of himself even if he knew he would never do anything like that to Heidi.
Heidi's smile slipped off her face when she saw him frown. "Hey...look at me." She said softly, trying to meet his gaze. Finally when he looked at her, she sighed. "Tarren...sometimes you need to be manipulative to get things done. I did it all the time with Ryker...so I wouldn't have to do my.homework. But as long as you don't cheat people, I think you are Ok." She said softly, looking at him with worried eyes. He felt so ashamed of it..when in reality..she was the one who should be ashamed. She couldn't even read for goodness sake. How is she supposed to help her future kids..if she can't even read. She was anything but perfect, and messed everything up 90% of the time. Tarren had no need to feel this way. So why did he?
"You are the perfect girl for me you know that?" He said with a small smile stroking her cheek. She was soft and as warm as the sun and so much more satisfying. "You see past my faults because you see faults in yourself. You justify my actions but remind me what would be going too far." His eyes, he knew, showed just how touched he was by her total acceptance. "How do you not only make me the best version of myself but I don't even feel myself slipping back?" He asked her, already knowing the answer so it wasn't really a question.
Heidi felt her.face.get warm as she blushed, wanting nothing more to cover her face with her hands and die. No one ever complemented her as much as Tarren did. Ryker tried, but gave up after Heidi kept protesting. But with Tarren, she didn't protest..because she almost believed him. There was still a small smidgen of doubt in the back of her mind that she knew would never go away. She still didn't say anything, just lowered her gaze down to the sand. She didn't know what to say...Tarren was just way to nice.
Tarren saw that she wasn't going to say more and so he instead tugged on her hand, pulling her into the surf. Their boards were still up the beach but they didn't need them for what he was doing right now. He splashed water at her smiling playfully. He was acting like a child. He had done the same thing to Arianne whenever she got sulky he would drag her down to the beach behind their house and splash her and chase her down the beach until she couldn't not be happy. He hoped the same thing worked with Heidi.
Heidi looked up at him, puzzled. As he led her down to the surf. "What are you-" But she was interrupted when he splashed her in the face. "Tarren!" She shouted, blocking her face with her hands. "Dweeb!" She splashed him back, trying to get him back. Her only friend Sam had taught her that. Everyone was a dweeb. Whether they were good or not, that was up for them to decide. Tarren was aa good dweeb..one of the best ones she knew. Sam was amazing, she stood up for Heidi when she could, and tutored her for each subject as well. Unfortunately, Sam moved Junior year..leaving Heidi almost completely alone. She still had Ryker of course..but he was her brother too.
"Dweeb?" Tarren called over the surf and their splashing. He was smiling and though he couldn't see her he was sure Heidi was too. He was shielding his face from her counter attacks. "Is that an insult or a term of endearment?" He asked it as if either one mattered to him which it didn't. He rushed her in the middle of a splash and picked her up by the waist carrying her deeper before collapsing with her in his arms so that they were both soaked. He came up with her in his arms and brushed her soaking hair out of her eyes.
"Yeah dweeb!" She replied, splashing him while trying in vain to shield herself. She was having loads of fun. Ryker and her did this occasionally, but he always one because he would fake getting hurt and then Heidi would rush over and then he would dunk her. She fell for it every time. "Well its a little bit of Ah!" She screamed as he picked her up by the wasit. Heidi struggled to get free, laughing the entire time. "Put me dow-" But she was once aagain interrupted, this time, she got dunked. When they arose again, all of her hair was soaked and in her face while she spit out water. "You are so going to get it later." She threatened, moving her hair out of her eyes. She couldn't stop smiling though, and was glad she met him...again. She hadn't smiled this much around another actual human being she wasn't related to in years. And it felt so good.
"I'm looking forward to it." He told her when she threatened to get him later. He shook his hair out sending droplets of water flying everywhere. Tarren reached and pushed her hair away from her face and grinned down at her devilishly. "But for now," He added. "I win." He leaned down and kissed her, just barely. "In more ways than one." With that he took off back towards the shore and plopped down on the sand. He sprawled out on the sand, closing his eyes as he looked up at the sun. This was the perfect felling, well, almost. He was still missing Heidi right now because she hadn't made it to shore yet.
Heidi shook her head. Sure, he'll look forward to it. But when it happens, he'll regret messing with her. She let him kiss her, not wanted to deprive him of her amazing kissing skills! "Yeah..well this was a one time thing." She warned, ringing her sopping wet hair out. She hadn't planned on really doing it today, but now she was going to have to. After he had gotten up, she sat there for a moment longer, then followed, walking just behind him to her towel and water bottle. She grabbed them, then plopped down next to him. She didn't say anything, but sat in the comfortable silence that filled between them.
Tarren opened one eye and saw Heidi sitting in the sand beside him. They really hadn't done much surfing and he wasn't sure they were going to do anymore but he was content with that for now. Hopefully this wasn't going to be the only day at the beach they spent together. His shirt was sticking uncomfortably to his skin so he sat up and took it off, laying it on his surfboard to dry out a bit. He laid back down and closed his eye, listening to the shushing of the ocean and the occasional cry of a gull over head. He sighed.
Heidi had dried her hair as much as she could, before she giving up and tying it into a braid down her back. She sat there for a couple more minuets, before her ADHD kicked in, making her restless. She stood, leaving Tarren and headed down to where the sand was damp, and began making a sandcastle, grabbing shells, sticks, everything. It was gonna be so epic. She hummed softly as she worked, a look of concentration on her face.
Tarren couldn't help but smile as Heidi got up and walked away. Her restless energy motivated him a stop just laying there. He stood up slowly, stretching out before walking over to her. He sat down, Indian style, across from her with enough space for her to continue making her sand castle. "Can I help?" He asked, running wet sand through his fingers and squinting up at the sun for a moment. It must have been a couple hours now since they came out here. "Maybe I could be you assistant since I don't much know what I'm doing?"
Heidi had gathered all of her supplies and was getting ready to start when Tarren sat down across from her. "Oh, Good morning." She said with a giggle. She grinned when he asked if he could help, glad she wasn't going to have to do it alone. "Sure!" She handed him one of the plastic cups that she had found during her scavenger hunt. "Here, help me do the base" she told him, brushing her bangs out of her face as she began to pack the sand into the cup.
