I found this book difficult to read at times. Not because the language was difficult but because of the graphic, intense scenes. I found them to be incredibly overwhelming at times to the point where I had to actually stop reading and just digest everything going on. I am glad Patty McCormick didn't shy away from the gore. I think it was necessary to really show just how brutal the Khmer Rouge were.
What did you think of all the brutality? Did you find it difficult to read at times?
I found it somewhat difficult to read near the beginning but I quickly got used to it, which is a little worrisome. I think this was due to a combination of seeing violence in our culture all the time, in the news, movies, video games, etc., and a subconscious wish that none of it really happened. It's very surreal, that humans did this to one another.
