Do you believe in psychic's?
How would you react if someone you knew confessed that they have a psychic ability?

If you do believe in psychics...
Why do you think some people have the ability, and others do not?

Corrine (itsactuallycorrine) | 9 comments Totally believe in psychics, and I love books that include them too! We have a local shop that does Psychic Fairs every month.

I think we all have the ability, and it's just more prevalent/practiced in some people.

Have you ever tried a tarot card reading, tea leaves, or palm reading?

message 4: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I had a VERY accurate tarot card reading a few years ago. I realize that a lot can be picked up by body language and demographics such as age, but I'm telling you, the things this woman said were just too spot on for me not to believe. And it was about the most obscure thing ever. Not something normal person would be worried about. Long story short, my dad was pressuring me to reinvest money he had intially invested for my kid's college and it was stressing me out, but not something I said anything to anyone about. This card reader picked up on the father figure, money, and so much more that fit so exactly to my situation it was spooky.

Once upon a time I had a psychic reading. She said she got glimpses of things and that people spoke to her when she touched things. She used my wedding rings and came up with a ton of stuff. She predicted that I would have 3 kids, boy, girl, boy. That is EXACTLY what I had. You can't plan for that! She kept saying "they keep telling me 4 kids, but I only see 3" At that point, I had just had a miscarriage. Not something I shared with the people I was there with. She also told me a bunch of stuff about a cousin of mine. This is a cousin that I wasn't very close to, but she performed my wedding ceremony so she was linked with my rings. Not something this psychic could have known! She told me a lot about a recently deceased grandfather as well. It was very cool. I have tried to find her again, but last I heard she was not well. I'm not sure what that meant, but she did get awful headaches.

That is a pretty accurate tarot reading!
I think that there are a lot of fakes out there, but I genuinely believe in the ability.
It makes me sad that some of them are con artists. I'm glad you got one that wasn't. :) Did she tell you anything that hasn't come to pass...yet?

message 6: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I saw the psychic before my first child was born, probably back in 1995. I'm thinking everything has happened or not happened as the case my be. She had described to my mom an accident at home that she could avoid. She described an outfit down to the shoes that my mom had on, the dining room chair she stood on to reach the cupboard over the stove. She said she would fall doing this and break her wrist. From that point on, my mom never used the dining room chair to reach the upper cupboard! For me, she had described a major job change. She called it a redirection. I was an accountant at Ford Motor at the time and eventually quit in 2000 to stay at home with my three kids. I guess that counts as a job change?

LOL I suppose that counts as a job change. :)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 188 comments I think all people have some psychic abilities. Most of the time we learn to ignore it rather than fostering it. After all we only use a tiny portion of our brains.

As for readings, I do and have had various readings - most pretty accurate. One totally bogus.

It is a scam for a lot of people and sincere in others. Like anything - there is fraud. But I do believe you can foster your abilities esp by trusting intuition and listening to that inner voice.

What about other psychic abilities, such as...
telepathy or telekinesis?

message 10: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 188 comments Probably exist in some people, once again that large unknown portion of the brain thing.

message 11: by Corrine (new)

Corrine (itsactuallycorrine) | 9 comments I have had several spot-on tarot card readings. The interesting thing I found is that I had two different psychics tell me the same thing.

Adrienne | 286 comments I believe in the ability to forsee events/make day to day predictions of the immeadiate future. I've never been to a psychic but events have happened in my life for me not to doubt. Nothing ground shaking just day to day things that make you stop and think and remember. Spooky really!

message 15: by BK (last edited Jul 23, 2009 12:52PM) (new)

BK Blue (paradoxically) Very interesting topic! Like others have said, I think we all have a certain "sixth sense", the same way other animals have their instinct. Some of us just don't use it enough to build it. As for me, I am BIG on following my instinct. And it has saved my butt quite a few times. Sometimes I know something is going to happen before it happens, and I've also had dreams that came true before. But that said, I tend to analyze things and "guestimate" the outcomes, so that probably has something to do with it.

I have a deck of Tarot cards that I keep meaning to learn. I know a few Wiccans and they kept telling me I should learn them, plus I have always found them interesting. I did have most of the major arcana down, but it's been a while. I think there are a lot of frauds out there, and that you need to be careful.

As for telepathy or telekinesis, I honestly don't know. I do know that thoughts have power, and I am sure anyone has had at least a few moments where they knew what the other was thinking. If you have read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, do you remember what Jim Williams said about the dice? Thoughts and will power can influence things, even though it is subtle. I have a bad habit of finishing what other people are saying or guessing what they are about to do. But it is usually people I know and when you've been around someone long enough, you tend to be able to know how they generally think and react. So I think a lot of it has to do with how close you are to someone and whether you can read body language or not.

message 16: by BK (new)

BK Blue (paradoxically) Oh and if someone told me they had a psychic ability, I would ask them what kind and to prove it. Especially if they're under the age of 18 or so. I might believe that humans have the potential, but I am of the "I'll believe it when I see it" philosophy, lol.

message 17: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne | 286 comments 6th sense is good way of putting it Bonfire....accounts for all those times when you(universal you) think about someone you haven't seen for years then promptly bump into them the next day or you think you'd like something to happen and low and behold it does!

message 18: by BK (new)

BK Blue (paradoxically) Yep! I think everyone uses it to some extent. They just probably don't realize it.

message 19: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne | 286 comments I think you have to educate your mind to be receptive. In a similar to way that you learn other skills. I've always found this subject very interesting, there are lots of small unexplained things that happen that are really to strange to be mere coincidences.

I know how to read tarot cards, but I am not any good. My mother was great with them...My grandmother used to do palm reading(never taught, just instinctive), but she stopped. She said that it creeped her out that everything she predicted came true. Of course, that was before I was born so...who knows. My great grandma did it all, but she preferred tea leaves. I remember her reading mine once when i was REALLY young(pre-school), but I don't remember what she saw... LOL I think that while there are a lot of fakes...there are also many who truly do "sense" something...

BonFire wrote: "I want to learn if for no other reason than that I love the deck that I have and it would be a waste not to. lol "

A lot of decks come with instructions...or you could try looking up a website online. Hmmm...if you have a new age shop near you, someone there may be able to teach you. My Moms deck was REALLY old. I think it used to be my Great Grandmas...I should ask her if she still has it. The last time I saw it, I was about 7 years old. LOL

message 23: by BK (new)

BK Blue (paradoxically) It came with an instruction book, and I have another Tarot book too, so I can cross-reference (I guess I am weird that way). The book it came with just didn't seem enough. lol

I know that the instruction books are supposed to be used as a guide, but really tarot card reading is mostly about intution. Basically, just follow your gut instincts...I guess that isn't much help...

message 25: by Dianne (new)

Dianne Hartsock | 12 comments Do I believe in psychics? I think the human mind is capable of anything. I absolutely believe that one day we'll evolve to the point where psychic ability will be the norm. But not yet. There may be a few true psychics out there, but I have to say, it hasn't been proven to me yet. But in the future...

Helmy Kusuma | 5 comments Of course! I will believe them because I believe myself :)
I consider myself as a psychic, not the one with oracle or tarot card, though.
I would describe myself as clairesentient

message 27: by Dianne (new)

Dianne Hartsock | 12 comments I'm sorry. I'm not sure what clairesentient means. Sounds fascinating. Do you mind sharing?Alex

message 28: by Helmy (new)

Helmy Kusuma | 5 comments I am copying this from wikipedia
===================================================
Clairsentience (feeling/touching)
In the field of parapsychology, clairsentience is a form of extra-sensory perception wherein a person acquires psychic knowledge primarily by feeling.[23] The word is from the French clair, “clear,” + sentience, “feeling,” and is ultimately derived from the Latin clarus, “clear,” + sentiens, derived from sentire, “to feel”.
In addition to parapsychology, the term also plays a role in some religions. For example: clairsentience is one of the six human special functions mentioned or recorded in Buddhism. It is an ability that can be obtained at advanced meditation level. Generally the term refers to a person who can feel the vibration of other people. There are many different degrees of clairsentience ranging from the perception of diseases of other people to the thoughts or emotions of other people. The ability differs from third eye in that this kind of ability cannot have a vivid picture in the mind. Instead, a very vivid feeling can form.
Psychometry is related to clairsentience. The word stems from psyche and metric, which means "soul-measuring".
====================================================

it is like knowing/understanding without thinking..

message 30: by Helmy (last edited Jun 08, 2011 05:49AM) (new)

Helmy Kusuma | 5 comments Ah... it is often times fun, but I do have my bad hair days: it's when I question myself "whether it is me, or him/her?".
When I am in a low energy condition, I would be swung around by other's strong emotion. At those times, it is hard to feel myself; I kinda lost myself to the world.
My family doesn't know about this. It's better to stay that way :D
Their state of mind would not accommodate this kind of thing. I feel it ;)

message 32: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk | 1184 comments I believe.

I believe enough to do readings myself, tarot, runes, and sometimes I just "get messages."

Several of my friends are psychics who read professionally as well as engage in other spiritual practices (one is a Native American Shaman and Spiritual Teacher, for example.

I think it is an ability that many people have, but fewer acknowledge. Like anything else involving a talent, like art or music, practice improves one's ability.

message 35: by Cary (last edited Oct 02, 2011 07:58AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 344 comments I don't believe in Psychics in the way that they can read minds and see the future literaly. They are people gifted with extreme powers of observation. By powers of observation & dedutction of a persons age, clothes, condition of clothes, and other keen obervations they can make fairly accurate assumtions about people & their histories. As far as telling the future. They study history carefully. The history of people, and the history of the world. Again by keenly interpreting patterns, and applying them to the current situation they can make shrewd assumtions on the future. Helenistic civilizations, Greeks placed a high value on Oracles(pychics)as demonstrated by the Delphic Oracle during the Persian wars. The Romans also were much into astrology. But there is nothing magic or unexplainable about it. Kind of like Jane on The Mentalist : )

message 36: by Dianne (new)

Dianne Hartsock | 12 comments To me, telling the future is too much like time travel. I don't believe the future exists yet, so there's nothing to read. I agree that some people are to in tune with others that they can make a pretty accurate prediction of an outcome, but it still remains a guess. But can a person recieve visions of what another is doing at that moment? I think it's possible.

message 37: by Saphire (new)

Saphire (saphirejasper) | 14 comments I believe that there are physics. All humans are not the same. Some humans have extra sensory preception which allows them to have some abilities not much humans have

message 39: by Dianne (new)

Dianne Hartsock | 12 comments I'm sorry Elaine. That wasn't very nice of them. I think the word psychic covers a lot of talents. If you have any kind of ESP (extra sensory perception) you're considered a psychic.

message 42: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) Harry Houdini strongly did not believe in psychics, so much that many times he would attend meetings held by them and try to disprove them. He also did this with those who claimed to communicate with the dead aside from the other things psychics are known for. He was actually successful in disproving quite a few people.

In one incident a woman claimed she could make a spirit rise and told everyone to hold hands and close their eyes, Houdini did however kept his leg close to the womans under the table and felt her leg rise to lift the table up..catching her.

Also a woman claimed to make a trumpet like device that was said to contact spirits float in the air by itself. However Houdini when everyones eyes were closed sprinkled a black substance on the device so after people looked on astonished that it was floating Houdini pointed out that the womans fingers were covered in black meaning she touched the object.

Little fun info on Houdinis dislike for psychics.
