Paper Tigers has been just as good as Clockwork City so far, albeit quite different. We're getting some very interesting hints about the world via Orio's encounter with another outcast.

The newest page adds even more to the intrigue. That last line is chilling to the bone.

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) Yeah. I wonder who the people who came in were, if they were the mannequin-like people we've seen already or if they were actually human. I could see humans taking apart the automaton-people.

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Humans would be my bet, but we'll see. The other interesting (and scary) thing here is from the way the story is being told the automatons are back in control of the city and paranoid about letting anyone in because of this incident. So did they drive the intruders out or some more drastic/unpleasant retaliation?

Was unfortunately right about my unpleasant feeling. What a powerful / creepy sequence. One panel showing the edges of a disassembled automaton and one of a crowd around a guillotine and the reader knows everything they need to without any actual violence being show.

Doubt we'll be explicitly finding out who the intruders were, but given the guillotine my guess is still humans.

Getting quite dark, but still incredibly interesting.

Mary Catelli | 994 comments Certainly starting to explain some of the backstory

Wow. Not exactly what I was expecting, but really interesting. And what a beautifully executed page. Right atmosphere, all the attention is centered on what he's saying, and you can see Orio's reaction to his heart-wrenching story.

No good could possibly come from calling Bauble "vermin."

Oh heck no. I'm just waiting to see what kind of chaos he'll cause.

message 10: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 994 comments Yeah, that's probably unwise.

I had been thinking maybe Orio would cause some chaos instead, as she's very protective of Bauble, but apparently she's settled on the silent treatment. Probably driving him more crazy than an outburst would have...

Essentially saying "I told you it was safe" while still hanging from a cliff is pretty much the definition of tempting fate.

message 13: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 994 comments how true!

message 14: by Selena (new)

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) Yup. Soon as he said it I thought, "Well, now something just HAS to go wrong."

I love the design of this page. And I'm very curious as to how/where they "poof"ed.

They either landed in sand or snow. Hard to tell. I'm inclined to say sand, since it didn't strike me as cold enough for that much snow.

message 17: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 994 comments Yeah, I thought that was a "poof" of some dusty material poofing out from the collision.

message 18: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Ah. Makes more sense. Really looked like water to me, and I thought the scream would go all the way down to the point of impact if they submerged.

I was also picturing the dust cloud and "splash" as small (person sized), but there's not really anything to give scale so it could be much larger than I originally thought.

message 19: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 994 comments Well, now we know what she thinks of it, in depth:

First the guilt

Then the unnerving:

Ha ha, you linked to this page. :P

I wonder what was with the broken speech bubble on this page: http://hingescomic.blogspot.com/2014/... Has his speech bubbles always been like that and I just never noticed?

message 22: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
The last two pages with Bubbles feeling left out and then Orio giving him some attention were really well done.

Selena wrote: "Has his speech bubbles always been like that and I just never noticed? "

It's funny - I was wondering the same thing, and I went back to look and it seems his speech bubbles have indeed always been like that. I never noticed either.

It's back! Great image to reopen with.

Next page is up: http://hingescomic.blogspot.com/2014/...

I have no idea what I'm looking at in that last panel.

Mary Catelli | 994 comments That is odd

message 26: by Selena (new)

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) Looks like some kind of "animal" got into their supplies.

message 29: by Selena (new)

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) ^ I totally get where she's coming from, though. If I had seen one of those take out half a city block, I wouldn't trust one in the wild, no matter how nice it seemed.

message 30: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Yeah, I'd be rather freaked out too. Now the big question: is this a different species or a baby (who will grow to the size of the other one)?

Or was the one that went bonkers in town trained to do so? Maybe they tend to be really friendly in the wild.

This page is fantastic. I really like the "safe distance" Orio is following at.

Selena wrote: "Or was the one that went bonkers in town trained to do so? Maybe they tend to be really friendly in the wild. "

Good point. Evil influence behind the one that attacked the town is a very good bet.

Mary Catelli | 994 comments Dear me. So that wasn't a "Hey that's a long way down" sort of stopping.

message 38: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
I had been wondering if they were looking at something specific. My guess would have been a creature of some sort though. This is very interesting, and from the indicated decay of the town, a bit worrying.

message 40: by Selena (new)

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) I wonder what happened in this place? Why it got abandoned?

message 41: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Me too. And if this might be where the "humans" came from.

http://hingescomic.blogspot.com/2014/...

Oh boy. More animals is definitely not going to help Orio's nerves.

message 42: by Selena (new)

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) Doesn't look like Bauble's too happy about it either.

Most likely. And at an inopportune moment, like the second Orio starts to relax.
