I didn't realize until I started reading, but this is a local book for me. I knew Dr. Wickland is out in Montana now, but didn't realize she was in Minnesota when this mostly took place. Her home, Cambridge, is the town my husband grew up in. Her daughter was a year behind him in school. That made a lot of this hit really hard for me, and more than just because I spend so much of my time interviewing clinic workers and providers. Now all I want to do is figure out how to reopen her Montana clinic in her honor, especially since the closing had cut another large patch of the middle US inaccessible again.
Robin, let me know how I can assist in reopening the clinic! Perhaps I can do the social media aspect...I'm certainly a bit far away but I'd love to part of that project. I also, while reading, realized you'd have a strong connection to it.
What hit home for me, having absolutely no connection to the region, was the stories of protestors. I forget that the jerks I deal with at the clinic I escort at are relatively tame. I read this and was very thankful for a little perspective on that!
