Erin Sefranek Hi everyone! Looking for a new book or series. I'm a big mystery fan. Lots of urban fantasy have mystery as well but I love when they are combined with something like an FBI team or a group of paranormal investigators for example. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Sharon Michael | 111 comments One of the recent ones I've found that I like very much is a series that starts with Midnight Riot (Peter Grant, #1) by Ben Aaronovitch . Police procedural/ alternate England with a bit of Victorian/steampunk and the two main characters are the 'magic/paranormal' unit officers.

Justin Gustainis | 4 comments I don't know if you can call the protagonist an "investigator" as such (although he does some investigating), but I'm a big fan of Richard Kadrey's "Sandman Slim" novels (four so far, I believe, with more in the works). James Stark was sent to Hell while still alive; as you might imagine, he did not enjoy his stay. Now he's back, and looking to get even -- which he does, in spades. The books (after the first one) are more than revenge tales, however. James Stark is, IMHO, the toughest Sandman Slim (Sandman Slim, #1) by Richard Kadrey badass in urban fantasy today. For me, that's high praise.

Practical Mike | 35 comments The next book in The Monster Hunter International series Monster Hunter International (MHI, #1) by Larry Correia is going to be told from the view point of an agent in the Monster Control Bureau. The first four books are about a paramilitary organization that sometimes works with the MCB to destroy monsters. Highly recommend this series.

I'd tell you to stay away from Bureau 13 and Seal Team 666... some good in these books, but way too many negatives IMO.

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 138 comments If you want a great private investigator urban fantasy, then check out Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series. Harry is a wizard private eye working in Chicago.

Some others I would suggest is:
Kevin J. Anderson's Dan Shamble series. Dan is a zombie private investigator working in New Orleans with his ghost girlfriend and human lawyer friend.
Carole Nelson Douglas's Delilah Street series. Delilah works with her ex-FBI boyfriend.
Lee Driver's Chase Dagger series. Chase is a hard-nosed detective who works with Sara Morningsky, a Native American girl with divine shape-shifting powers.
Laura Anne Gilman's Paranormal Scene Investigations series.
Darynda Jones's Charley Davidson series. Charlotte “Charley” Davidson, a part-time private investigator helps the police with her ability to contact the dead in her full-time role as the Grim Reaper, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in a paranormal romantic suspense series.

Jenny | 20 comments These ones I think might be only the lines of what you are looking for
Chosen By Blood (Para-Ops, #1) by Virna DePaul Sins & Shadows (Shadows Inquiries, #1) by Lyn Benedict similar along those lines would be Dying Bites (The Bloodhound Files, #1) by D.D. Barant Legacy (The Niteclif Evolutions, #1) by Denise Tompkins and of course Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher

Shomeret | 233 comments Perhaps these books by Marion Zimmer Bradley are what you're looking for:
The Inheritor
Witchlight
Gravelight
Heartlight

These all deal with white magicians who are paranormal investigators.

message 10: by Lauren (new)

Lauren All Seeing Eye by Rob Thurman has a main character P.I. and I believe the next in the series is in the works and out soon-ish.

message 11: by Erin (new)

Erin Sefranek Thanks so much everyone, & keep the suggestions coming of course :)
Btw I just opened the 1st Monster Hunters (best 1st line ever, lol, something like - I've lived the American Dream everyone has thought about, throwing my arrogant imbecile boss out of a 14th story window)

Sara | 51 comments I would recommend:

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher - Harry is a Wizard/Private Investigator.

The Kate Daniel series by Ilona Andrews. Kate works for the Guild and the Order as an investigator. Midway through the series, Kate and Andrea form Cutting Edge - an investigation firm. Gunmetal Magic is a spin-off book devoted to a murder investigated by Andrea.

The Bloodhound Files by DD Barant. Jace is an FBI profiler and works for another world's National Security Agency.

The Niki Glass series by Jenna Black. Nikki is a private investigator.

The President's Vampire series by Christopher Farnsworth. Nathanial Cade, a vampire, is part of the Secret Service.

The Charlie Madigan series by Kelly Gay. Charlie is a police officer/detective.

The October Daye series by Seanan McGuire. October is a private investigator.

The Grendel Affair by Lisa Shearin. The main character and the supporting cast are part of SPI - an organization devoted to stopping supernatural crime and protecting the public from realizing it exists.

The World of the Lupi series by Eileen Wilks. Lily is a police detective and later a FBI agent.

Becky (fibrobabe) | 13 comments If you're good with m/m romantic elements, The Magpie Lord and Widdershins are the first books of two magical historical series with professional investigators. In Widdershins, Griffin is a PI who's gotten caught up in supernatural shenanigans, and in The Magpie Lord, Stephen polices magical practitioners.

Frost Moon is a a modern day Urban Fantasy with a female lead who is a magical tattoo artist who gets pulled into an FBI search for a serial killer. This one is a series, too, but I've only read the first book so far.

Leiah Cooper (leiahingolden) | 332 comments I agree with all these recommendations and will raise you with Unshapely Things (Connor Grey, #1) by Mark Del Franco Unquiet Dreams (Connor Grey, #2) by Mark Del Franco Unperfect Souls (Connor Grey, #4) by Mark Del Franco

Connor Gray, the Investigator in the series, is a druid (rather unusual in and of itself) who used to be an Investigator for "The Guild" until he had a run-in with a radical environmentalist elf, and now his powers are crippled. It is a great storyline, IMO, sort of Dresden Files meets The Nightside. Very cool....

message 15: by Erin (new)

Erin Sefranek Awesome, thanks again everyone, I've tagged all your suggestions (minus the few I had read)

message 16: by Feral (new)

Feral | 42 comments Here's a new one I am going to try The Light Who Shines. Blue, a paranormal investigator, investigates the death of a teenage boy and stumbles unto magic that could unravel the boundaries between Earth and the Plane of Fire.

message 17: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (brandiec) I highly recommend these series:

The Laundry Files series, by Charles Stross
The Incryptid series, by Seanan McGuire
The Black Night Chronicles, by John G. Hartness
The Cheshire Red Reports, by Cherie Priest
The Downside Ghosts series, by Stacia Kane
The Greywalker series, by Kat Richardson
The DeChance Chronicles, by David Niall Wilson
The Arthur Wallace series, by Jonathan Wood
The Secret Histories, by Simon R. Green

Other series which fit in this genre but which I personally have not enjoyed as much:

The Bryant and May series, by Christopher Fowler
The Hollows series, by Kim Harrison

message 18: by D.Michele (new)

D.Michele | 11 comments SM Reine has a new series for paranormal investigations. I read 'Witch Hunt,' but haven't picked up the second one, yet. It's somewhat testosterone-fueled (told from the male point-of-view, complete with some... risque comments here and there) and definitely good for a Saturday read.

Ed Nemo (ed_nemo) | 112 comments There are bunch of great series listed. The best Paranormal FBI series in my opinion is Bureau 13 by Nick Pollotta. Funny and weird.

That was the last one Nick wrote before he died. Most of the stuff he was doing was under the Pen name James Axler all Military fiction stuff. The first three B13 books were published in the early 90s by Ace. Bureau 13/Judgement Night, Doomsday Exam and Full Moonster.

They are all a lot of fun.

message 24: by Louisjohn99 (new)

Louisjohn99 | 4 comments I'm going through the "Rivers of London" series by Ben Aaronovitch. The main character is a London PC who is appointed as an apprentice to a wizard that is a British detective. There are some really good paranormal elements like in the Dresden Files novels, but they read like a good crime novel. There are four or now and the fifth comes out soon.

message 25: by Allie (new)

Allie Webb | 3 comments Darynda Jones's Charley Davidson's series is witty with constant investigations since the main character is a PI. I also loved the Kate Daniel's series by Ilona Andrews.
