Action/Adventure Aficionados discussion

Hi all,

Im going on a scuba diving/snorkelling holiday in a few months and wanted to take a book(s) that are about an undersea adventure/action/thriller.....my first choice is certainly a clive cussler as they pretty much all relate to the sea....but please nominate any other books that match this underwater theme

Deep Fathom by James Rollins works and, if you like classics... The Land That Time Forgot by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

If you want Cussler, try his two nonfiction books, The Sea Hunters and The Sea Hunters II . Both involve his searches for lost shipwrecks (and a couple airplane wrecks), and tell both the modern-day stories and the stories of the wrecks themselves.

Oh, and I also Butler Did It!. It's not "underseay" persay, but it is a Nautical story at it's heart.

Well, that is very interesting that he actually searched for shipwrecks. What a life some people have. Amazing.

Sphere is probably my all time favorite for underwater - the book is much better than the movie.

If you are looking for non-fiction, Shadow Divers is hard to beat. Diving into Darkness is also a good one.

The Experiment very unusual book. A doctor--diagnosed with lung cancer--refuses to bow down to death--and opts to participate in an experiment to replace his lungs with gills.

The Kraken Wakes, the classic from John Wyndham.

The Girl of the Sea of Cortez sweet tale from Peter Benchley of 'Jaws' fame.

The Deep also by Benchley. His smash hit follow-up to 'Jaws'.

Yes, I thought of Sphere too. I found it close to the movie. I think my mom and I are the only ones in the world who thought that was a great movie ;)

Wow, I had no idea the deep was a follow up to Jaws! I've known since I was a teenager that Bentley focused on water type creatures, and I read Jaws growing up (need to re-read). I've even owned some of his stuff. Really need to find The Deep now.

'The Deep' was a *huge* hit movie. The story has no relation to 'Jaws' and surprisingly, does not emphasize any sea-monsters (yes, I realize that later on in his career, Benchley hopped on that gravy-train) but immediately after 'Jaws' anything and everything he wrote, was considered potential box-office gold. No matter what he cranked out, it was snapped-up and adapted into a movie, almost no matter what aspect of the marine world, he chose to dwell on. This title cemented his career for good. He was a hero. A wunderkind. Sure...all too soon, producers realized their zeal had to be reined in...when Michael Caine couldn't save a movie about pirates ('The Island'); Benchley-fervor began to ebb.

But man, 'The Deep' was the title on everyone's lips for a while. Unusual; because it is simply a very basic seaside-crime thriller. The thing was though: Jacqueline Bissett's breasts. She famously appears in a wet t-shirt. It just blew people's minds.
