I read it before reading Dr Sleep. I may pop in to add to the discussion.

I will be starting this one today. Its a perfect winter read. We have -30 to -40 wind chills in WI (again). I'm kind of hoping that my university will be closed tomorrow so I can be a shut-in reading machine.

I didn't know Jack's son was 5. I have a 4 yr old...lol. This should be interesting.

I wonder if jack is still an alcoholic. Seems that way.

I was gonna start last night, but started reading The Lost by Jack Ketchum instead. I'll start today.

Wow. I feel bad for Wendy and what she had to go through with Jack. What a drunken fool!

He's also pretty conceited and unapologetic from the very beginning. Addy, are you picturing Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duval as you read? I wonder what my Jack and Wendy would look like if not for the movie.

I seriously cannot stop reading this! Yes, as much as I try, I can't help but picture them. Nicholson fits the personality well. I can't wait to watch the movie after I read this. Its been too long.

I can't wait to read Doctor Sleep. When I finished the book all those years ago, I actually penned a letter to Stephen King asking for a sequel.

Wow. That's pretty cool! Got your sequel huh? I'm pretty curious about Dr Sleep. Can't wait to read it myself.

Dr. Sleep is truly amazing. You'll both really like it I hope.

I actually tried to read this but couldn't get into it. I'll try again. Which is ironic, because Dr. Sleep is sooo great...

I guess The Shining is difficult to get into because it's so different from the movie. Me, I breezed right through it, but that is irrelevant. You should give it a second chance, Aric.

I read the book first before ever seeing the movie and was disappointed, though not by the performances.

I'm still lagging behind at 11%. Danny's childhood impressions of his parents real life issues was well written as was the backstory about Jack's drinking problems. I can't wait to be reintroduced to Hallorhan. He's my favorite.

The fight between Ullman and jack over the phone was pretty funny. Holleran is the cook right?

Yeah, I might have botched that spelling. I'm not quite there yet.

Is the fight on the phone where Jack goes into town from the hotel and is chewing on aspirin?

I prob botched it too. Yes, that's the part where jack chews on the aspirin.

Don't know why that stuck in my mind, but I've been chewing my aspirin ever since reading that years ago. Now, every time I take pain relievers, I think of Jack Torrence. Pretty weird, huh?

No. Sometimes books just stay with you and give you ideas...even if they're silly:)

I'm almost at 50%. The topiary scene was creepy! I think I would have peed my pants if I were jack.

So jack was locked in the pantry but Grady made him promise something horrific to unlock the door. I can't believe it!

I'm totally down for Dr. Sleep. Can we wait another week before starting. I work full time and am in night classes, so my reading time is limited.

I'm near 50% with The Shining and can also finish this week. Then it's time to catch up with Kin.

Are you noticing differences between the book and movie? Crazy how many details I remembered from 20 years ago. I'm definitely picking up more of the sexual and recovering alcoholic tension this time around. Are you impressed with the book?

Yes, I can wait. I don't remember the movie much so I will have to watch it to really make any kind of commentary. I really like the tension and the cat and mouse feel to it. Right now I'm on my toes as Wendy goes to investigate....jack lurking in the darkness.

Finished! It was pretty awesome. Gruesome, scary, brutal, but sad as Danny had to lose his father to the hotel. I loved it! Can't wait for Dr sleep.

Really interesting to see both Jack and Wendy struggling to avoid falling into the same roles as their parents. I wonder if Danny will have similar issues as a young adult in Doctor Sleep. It will be interesting to read both books back to back to see what themes are similar.
