Emily O (readingwhilefemale) Yeah. That guy was ridiculous. He has the longest, biggest, most epic symphonies ever made. He holds the record for longest symphony movement (I think it's in his 5th symphony) and he wrote the Symphony of a Thousand, which can have a thousand performers. My favorite of his is his second symphony, called the Resurrection Symphony. It is incredible, even if it is very long, and the 5th movement is amazing.
There is also the subject of who conducts his symphonies. Clearly the best conductor of Mahler is Bernstein. He is so incredible, and he really knows how to bring Mahler's work to life. I think he understood him for some reason. Either way, if you ever have the chance to listen to (or watch) Mahler conducted by Bernstein, do it.
