ak (anne-kat) ((yeah... and I spent probably an hour looking for a pic I liked. didn't find one... I'll probably change the one I've got sometime -.-'))

((You mean the character pic? Yeah... I don't like the one I used for Alex, but all pictures of the real Alex Mercer (the character I based him on) have blades and stuff coming out of his arms. I liked the way he looked without that stuff...))

ak (anne-kat) ((... ok. that's rather... freaky. w/o blades and stuff is good I guess))

ak (anne-kat) Jayne Carse was the only child of her parents, Robin and Jacob Carse. She was, in fact, one of two of the only children in her entire family, and she'd never met her cousin Maddi. Her mother's family lived in another country, and Jay never heard them mentioned. Every time she tried to talk about her Aunt Sharon, her mother's sister who she had seen only once, or her cousin Maddi, Sharon's daughter who was about Jay's age, her mother would shush her, and look around as if to see if anyone had heard.

By the age of seven, Jayne had stopped asking.

Jay's father's family, however, lived in the US like Jayne. They were always coming around for dinner or holidays, bringing Jay books and presents. They would be happy and merry... until after dinner, after Jay was supposed to be asleep. Then, they'd speak in hushed voices around the kitchen table, someone always standing by the window, keeping watch.

One night, when Jay was sixteen, she heard some of what they were talking about. By the age of sixteen, she felt she could be included. So, for the first time, she snuck downstairs. The curtains were drawn, and everyone talked in low voices, more hurried and fearful sounding than before. Jay could only catch snippets of the conversation:

"The Ivan..." "Who is Ivan?" Jayne whispered to herself.

"Russia... Robin, is Sharon ok, or did she get caught..."

Jay flattened herself to the stairwell wall, squeezing her eyes shut. She had to stay unnoticed. They were talking about Sharon...

"The war will change everything!" There was a bang, like a fist against the table.

"Nothing will survive."

"We have to stop it!"

"There is nothing we can do, except keep each other safe. I can't risk Jayne being in danger. She's innocent." Jay recognized her father's calm, firm voice.

"Jake, we're protesting, whether you like it or not, we have to. Leave Jay at home. She'll be fine. You'll be fine," someone argued.

There was a moment of silence, a sigh, and Jay heard her father agree.

The conversation continued, quieter, and Jay went back upstairs, shaken by what she'd heard. Sharon was Russian. Her mother's family... no wonder they were a forbidden topic. Jay went to bed then, but it was a while before she fell asleep.
