Breathtaking at the very least, Bodacious even.☺

Bodacious Bingo Buddies

What about the "dog theme" or the "farmer theme" or the "bingo theme"?

message 10: by Almeta (last edited Jan 27, 2014 03:17AM) (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11583 comments I have located a book for each genre listed on the BINGO board, so I can help out in any category that is needed.

Because I already have February books picked for these genres, My top preferences are:
Cultural
Myth/Fable
Short Stories
Historical Fiction
Crime
Science
Mystery
Suspense/Thriller
Paranormal

Second choices are:
Steampunk
Dystopian
Fantasy
Horror

After that I have at least one book for each genre on my TBR, so I am willing to fill in any gaps.

Oh, and I'll do the "Free Space"!☺☻☺

What are everyone else's reading preferences?

message 11: by Kerri (new)

Kerri My top preferences are
Suspense/thriller
Chick lit
Mystery
Crime
Memoir
Horror
Non-fiction
Humour

2nd choices would be
Historical fiction
Contemporary
Action/adventure
Romance
YA
Short stories.

Not a fan of Sci Fi, Dystopian, fantasy and have no idea what Steampunk is? But am willing to read pretty much anything else if it helps.

I am sooo not a fan of "chick lit" and "romance". I was hoping someone else would take up those genres!

message 13: by Kerri (new)

Kerri I don't mind them occasionally in between my horror and murder mystery and other heavier reads. I sometimes need to read something light after those. I guess this is where the teamwork comes in, as I am hoping someone else will want to read Sci Fi.

Alexandra (alex2911) | 916 comments I just checked the genres of my February books. Based on the GR-categorization these are:

Cultural
Contemporary
Steampunk
Historical Fiction
Mystery
Romance
YA

Apart from that I am sure I could also find something for any other categories (maybe chick lit and paranormal not so much but that probably is a question of definition).

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11583 comments "Five different team members have to read the books in a line (four if the free space is in the line)."

I think we should first take advantage of the "Free Space" in our strategy.

a. Diagonal Top Left to Lower Right Corner
Chic Lit
Mystery
Free
Steampunk
Biography

b. Diagonal Top Right to Lower Left Corner
Suspense/Thriller
Dystopian
Free
Short Stories
Cultural

c. Down the N Column
Fantasy
Paranormal
Free
Contemporary
Myth/Fable

d. Across the Middle Row

SciFi
Romance
Free
Non-Fiction
Crime

That's 16 books among 12 people. (We are sure to get more members before February 8th!)

I guess we should find out how many books each of us thinks they may be able to read.

I quite understand. My "learning" has to be disguised as entertainment, or I am lost quickly. Fortunately some scientific minds also have a sense of humor.

These are old, but two of my favorites...because they don't read like a text book...and not condescending:
The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher and Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body

I have The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements on my list for February.

Other entertaining or thought provoking ones have been:
Stiff The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach The Frog who Croaked Blue by Jamie Ward Blood Work A Tale of Medicine and Murder in the Scientific Revolution by Holly Tucker The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot Cosmos by Carl Sagan What the Bleep Do We Know!? Discovering the Endless Possibilities for Altering Your Everyday Reality by William Arntz The Omnivore's Dilemma A Natural History of Four Meals by Michael Pollan The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey Moneyball The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis The Botany of Desire A Plant's-Eye View of the World by Michael Pollan Small Wonder by Barbara Kingsolver Silent Spring by Rachel Carson Freakonomics A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (Freakonomics, #1) by Steven D. Levitt

Travis (travistousant) | 6007 comments interesting Almeta. I've never heard of any of those. I did find one book to fit the profile that was on my audible wishlist though The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean The Wave In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean by Susan Casey
So if the science box needed a person I have no problem there either

Sounds like a plan. Maybe this is the right time to confess that I still have some small issues with the bingo-rules but I think I almost figured it out. So we´ll start with a. and four team members will read those genres while the next four will start with b. and so on?

message 42: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1836 comments I've been assigned here!! Happy days!! :)

I'm happy to read anything, well maybe not happy but I can track down something in any of the genres. So fit me in where ever you like. I'm up for 3-5 books depending on which genres.

message 43: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6007 comments A few years ago I snuck in a conversation something about wearing those chaps and I'm really surprised no one has ever bought me a pair as a gag gift. Personally I think my wife is afraid I'd find a way to come walking out with them on while company was at the house. But geez, could you imagine the look on peoples faces if I did. Hmmm. I think I have to go shopping now.

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11583 comments Alexandra wrote: "So we´ll start with a. and four team members will read those genres while the next four will start with b. and so on? ..."

That is kinda how I picture it.

I have been playing around with everyone's lists and trying to slot everyone in. It is a bit difficult to do, not knowing how many books everyone thinks they can read.

I've put something together based on the seven people who have submitted their preferences, and for them each to read two books.

We have five new members who haven't let us know what they want to read yet. This should make it easier for us to at least reach the four BINGOs with the Free Space. (Most reading only 1 book instead of 2.)

Is anyone else working on a matrix/plan?

message 45: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6007 comments I was looking at my books to find 5 to read and was pretty well ready to finalize my decision when I came to the next problem. Currently we don't know how many boards we can complete. I'm thinking 1 and a partial second one probably. I think first we need everyone to commit to a guaranteed number of book(s). That will take care of board 1 and then any extra books work toward a second board. Getting a set number of books to work with is probably more valuable than the genres as the genres is more flexible. I wouldn't worry too much on a plan until all members have checked in with that. Regardless of the genres I know I will read a minimum of 3 books.
Also anyone who only has an interest in 1 book has yo be a board 1 member. I'm not good at planning or explaining I'm more of a do-er I think what I said makes sense

message 46: by Almeta (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11583 comments Travis of NNY wrote: "I was looking at my books to find 5 to read and was pretty well ready to finalize my decision when I came to the next problem. Currently we don't know how many boards we can complete. I'm thinking..."

Yep, you have described the situation perfectly.

Some genres have only one or two people interested in them. I placed these people first. And considered only the Free Space lines, so far.

This experiment completed two lines...with basically one book apiece. When the additional members report their preferences and possible number of books, more lines will be completed.

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

Morning, Bodacious Bods! Very happy to be joining you!

I'm probably a 1-book-wonder, so slot me in wherever you've a gap that needs filling. I'd prefer to avoid horror, sci-fi & dystopian if poss, but I'm sure I can track something down from any genre if needs be.

Almeta, it sounds like you have a handle on what needs doing? Afraid I couldn't attempt to get my head round matrices and the like, so if you have a plan I'd be very happy to go with it. Just to check I understand, we're trying to fill as many lines as possible, rather than to complete the whole board, is that right?

message 48: by Kerri (new)

Kerri I agree with RachelO, sounds like you have it sorted out Almeta, planning a matrix would do my head in. I'm happy for you to slot me in where needed, I
will be able to read 2 books.

message 49: by CatWrangler (new)

CatWrangler | 34 comments Hello, I'm reporting for duty, too.
Just like RachelO and Kerry I'm happy to be of some help to Almeta and read what genre is needed. I'll be able to read 3 or 4 books.
