Can anyone recommend something on Toulouse Lautrec and Montmartre? I’m looking for recreational reading, not research material, so something that’s in English and paperback or smaller than a coffee table book. Most of all, I’d like to find something written in a very “readable” style. I just finished school and enjoying not having to read the incredibly dense writing of authors like T.J. Clark, Donald Kuspit, et. al.

Hi Divvy,
I'm not sure which I like more.. Lautrec or Montmarte. ....but my favorite book of all time that encompasses the two is:
Toulouse-lautrec and Montmartre by Mary Weaver Chapin, Phillip Dennis Cate, Richard Thomson
The new ones in hardcover can be a little pricey.. (there is one I absolutley covet at a bookstore here in NYC!..it is so beautiful) but you can also get a used edition or paperback for much cheaper.
Reading the book, you will feel as if you are living the colorful life back in 1880's Paris. Hope you enjoy.
There is also a very interesting book by Reinhold Heller that I like called Toulouse-Lautrec: The Soul of Montmartre. I particulary liked the part of the book where he talks about Lautrec being "misfit amongst misfits in Montmarte."

Thanks Mary. I work at an academic library, so it shouldn't be difficult to get my hands on a copy (at least briefly.) I appreciate the recommendation. divvy
