I'm really looking forward to This Song Will Save Your Life - I'm glad you like it, because I trust your judgement.
Also, I believe that those two are the worst, because Mara (whose judgement I also trust) hates Paulo Coelho's work and everybody hates Sandry, lol.

Yeah, I was actually a little surprised that I liked it so much. There was no doubt in my mind that it'd be good (especially after hearing the author speak in Sept.) but it had a few twists in it that I didn't see coming. In a way it kinda throws out the same vibes as Fangirl, where you're dealing with some frustratingly realistic and flawed characters, which I always appreciate. Mara hates Coelho's work? xD I didn't know that, though after reading The Alchemist I can see why. Like, I felt like it had some good life lessons (or reminders?) in it, which is probably why it's sold so many copies. But overall the story was just kinda meh and simple to me, with lazy writing. There's more loose ends at the end of the Alchemist than there are tied ones, and even though it's supposed to be a *mystical* book that *leaves you thinking* that doesn't always fly well with me.
I've read 5! Thinking I might have to take your advice and read some graphic novels to boost my numbers. :) I've enjoyed most of what I've read so far this year, especially THE NAME OF THE WIND and the first Tiffany Aching book by Terry Pratchett, THE WEE FREE MEN. POETS TRANSLATE POETS was good in a non-fiction-y sort of way, although there were definitely some poems I appreciated more than other. Probably my least favorite of the bunch is actually THESE BROKEN STARS, and I wouldn't say it was bad--the story was entertaining enough, but I just didn't have much of an emotional connection with it. I had a bit of a book hangover after NAME OF THE WIND and couldn't think of anything I wanted to read next despite having piles of books on my floor...opted for something from my NetGalley queue, but the introduction really turned me off from it, so now I'm trying SCARLET by Melissa Meyer, although I wasn't quite in love with CINDER when I read it last year.
Don't you hate book hangovers? After I read one novel last year, I was pretty much ruined for sci-fi for an undetermined amount of time. (I'm still comparing ever SFF book to it. It blew my mind.)
I think the best book for me in January was probably The Last Policeman, but I enjoyed Toads and Diamonds most. Probably.
As for worst... I'm still struggling through Malice. It's not bad, or badly-written. It's just... not interesting. None of the other books I read in January even bordered on difficult for me to read.

I didn't make it to 8, but I got to 6! The best one was definitely Three Souls. None were actively bad, so I couldn't say which was the worst.
