'Goth,' for starters, is 'God' in the old Germanic language. 'Gothic' is 'Child of God' in the old Germanic language.See, the VisiGoths(sp?) used to be these raiders (I think) that formed in tribes. If I'm correct with my history, they tried to attack and plunder Rome. A 'Goth' in the Medieval era meant an uncivilized and savage person.
((Please correct me if any of that was incorrect. I've read that somewhere, but my memory is freakin' poor. And same for the info below . .))
Okay, let's go a bit forward in time. The punk explosion in Britain. That was pretty popular until the music birthed the Goth movement. Goth came from music.
As time passed, the Goth style has changed a bit. The music has changed a bit as well -- from good ol' Bauhaus, to such techno bands like Angelspit.
There are several types of Goth. You could be the OldSchool Goth. Or the DeathRocker. Perhaps an IntelGoth. You could easily make up your own type of Goth!
Makeup varies. It can usually depend on what type of Goth you are.
Personality. Goths are usually quiet, calm, observant, musical, and friendly. We aren't evil. We aren't vampires (unless you were aiming to be a VampireGoth). We aren't killers. And just becuase you're an adult doesn't mean you can't be Goth. Hell, I know a Finnish Goth band (The 69 Eyes, if you were curious) with a 41-year-old singer!
Last but not least, the color black. Black means different things to different people. It could represent absorbing prana or life force (for black absorbs sunlight). It could represent mourning. Or protection.
A last note. Just becuase you wear black or have black fingernails doesn't make you Goth. Just becuase you have a Mohawk doesn't make you punk. Just becuase your hair covers one of your eyes doesn't make you Emo. Goth is who someone is rather than what someone does, or wears, or what music they listen to.
