Description
It’s a dog eat dog world for Ava Martinez. On the surface her life seems charmed – beauty, brains, a successful veterinary practice – but Ava harbors a secret. And one rash act on a foggy night threatens to destroy it all. The niece of one of the most ruthless crime lords in the country, Ava has lived her life as an unwilling pawn in her uncle’s illegal game. When Ava accidentally stumbles upon an unknown man lying unconscious in the trunk of a car – a man destined for death at the hands of her uncle’s men – she risks her life to get him to safety and to thwart her uncle’s nefarious scheme. Little does she know that lifting the lid of that trunk will be like opening Pandora’s box.

When Assistant District Attorney Jordan Wellington – the man she rescued – brings his dog to the door of her veterinary clinic, she does her best to thwart his amorous intentions, but fate has a different idea. When a walk in the park, a friend’s blind date, seemingly everything throws them together, the normally strong-willed Ava finds herself irrevocably drawn into a seductive and deadly game. Because if Jordan ever regains his memory of that night, both of their lives could be in danger.(less)

Great! Glad you'll be joining the discussion.

Excited to read and discuss this one. Happy to have you join in Bonni and Susan.

message 8: by Bonni (new)

Bonni And thanks to a rather wet & dreary day where I live...I have finished this month's book. No spoilers but I will say that I have tagged the author's other books in the series as must read.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15104 comments Mod
Yay!!

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
Awesome to hear, Bonni! I'm almost ready to start.

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments Wow Bonnie, you're fast!

I can't wait to start this one. Need to finish what I'm reading first then jumping right in.

message 12: by Teri (new)

Teri Woolley Just bought the book at Amazon for my Kindle. I am reading "The Dark Witch" by NR right now so as soon as I'm done I'll start Serendipity.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15104 comments Mod
That's great, Teri!

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
I got held up this month with some reads I needed to finish but am now back on this one. Has anyone else, other than Bonni, finished it yet?

Elizabeth (elizabeth1023) I just finished it. Really liked it!! Let me know when everyone is ready to discuss. :)

message 16: by Bonni (new)

Bonni Same here...ready for it.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15104 comments Mod
Why don't you two start the discussion? It becomes spoiler free on 2/12 (it's a short month)! Until then, you can use the spoiler feature.

Lesley (whimsey2) | 113 comments Just finished it this morning and have downloaded the next 2 in the series. it reminded me a bit of Karen Rose's books and was a little by the formula but I enjoyed it. I had some Dejavu going on early in the book where I thought I had read it before but that is why I think it is by the formula reading. still enjoyable though

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments I'm about halfway through now. I really like the characters so far (main and secondary) though the suspense/mystery part feels a little slow right now. Hoping it'll pick up soon.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
I'm about 1/2 now too. I'm enjoying it. The author has a flowery, wordy way of describing/comparing things.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
I also like the humor in their conversations...witty - I love funny banter between H/h.

Elizabeth (elizabeth1023) There was definitely good banter in this book. So many contemporary romances now only have innuendo banter, or banter that leads to mad sex. I truly enjoyed the dialogue and plain ole conversation in this story.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
Me too. I'll finish tomorrow, I think. I'm still waiting for things to unfold with the suspense side but I'm loving the characters.

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments Finished the book. I really liked the writing as it was easy to read. The dialogue was quick and fun between Ava and Jordan. There's not a lot of suspense to it though so it read more of a CR with a dash of mystery thrown in, I was expecting a little more in that area but the author tied up all the loose ends nicely. Loved Jordan, he was like a bulldozer, never letting up until Ava gave in. :)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
I really like Jordan also. He is "persistent"! lol I liked him giving her the definitions of words and the joking around.

Elizabeth (elizabeth1023) She really captured that aspect a lot of lawyers have - the constant this is how I define the word and why my version is right.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
Exactly! And wow - Jordan is just so perfect...kinda like Roarke is perfect! (view spoiler) (not really a spoiler but don't want to risk spoiling anything.)

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments I love Jordan! His mannerisms and humor make him attractive to me. Plus, the fact he doesn't give up, persistent is right! I can understand why Ava was slow to trust though considering the kind of family she came from. I felt bad for her dad even though we didn't really get to see him.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
Jordan is great...Persistent, humor, sexy, just a good guy - like Roarke! :) That one bathtub scene is so sweet...and hot!

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments Sandra - *Star* wrote: "Jordan is great...Persistent, humor, sexy, just a good guy - like Roarke! :) That one bathtub scene is so sweet...and hot!"

Oh yes. Very sexy. So funny how he burst into the bath AND THEN asks her if it's okay. Lol!

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
Overall, I really enjoyed this one. I'll read more of this author's work.

message 32: by Bonni (new)

Bonni I thought it was really good. The interaction between Ava and Jordan had me laughing out loud. There were never any dull moments, the flow of the book kept me interested & I didn't want to put the book down. The only issue I had was that the author built up Ava's relationship with her uncle and how she wanted out but in the end the author ended it with a few words in the epilogue. Overall, realy rally good.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
I enjoyed it but I wanted more of a "bang" in the ending involving her uncle & the mob connections too. (view spoiler) I would have liked a more in depth solution to that issue. But definitely loved the characters & the relationship development.

message 34: by Bonni (new)

Bonni *Star*...
Exactly! For me it played the role in how Ava and Jordan met & the back and forth between them and it was anticlimactic.

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments There definitely was a greater focus on the relationship between Jordan and Ava than the actual backplot. I think that's what prevented me from giving it full 5 stars. It lacked in the suspense/mystery element.

message 36: by Bonni (new)

Bonni Throwing in the added murder case of Jordan's kept me wondering who the focus was on.

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments Bonni wrote: "Throwing in the added murder case of Jordan's kept me wondering who the focus was on."

Totally. I thought Jordan would be in more danger than Ava would be.

I think I'll add book 2 to my read for March and see if the author can bump up the suspense level for me.

message 38: by Bonni (new)

Bonni I have two more of hers on my wish list. They look to be good too. The one thing I really liked was how quick it read. Great for a rainy day!

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
I've added the next book to my list also. I did enjoy it and want to read the other guy's stories. I was just a bit let down with the suspense resolution in the end. She wrapped it up but it seemed chopped off.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15104 comments Mod
This is now a spoiler zone. Let it rip!

message 41: by Bonni (new)

Bonni Okay....I thought the "goon" could have been the one committing the murders. The author kept mentioning a knife.

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments The goon seems TOO obvious for the plot I think. I never made the connection between the broken glass though.

message 43: by Bonni (new)

Bonni True; I thought it would connect them even more and the two stories could come to a better conclusion. Totally missed the glass too.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
I felt like y'all...I kept expecting one of her uncle's goons to be the killer - it confused me a bit at first with this other guy. I was kinda like "where did he come from" when I realized it was a different guy altogether.

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments Yeah when she gave us the POV of the killer, I was taken aback because everything else was so focused on Jordan and Ava. And it was just the one time we got something from the killer's view.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
Yes...it threw me a bit at first. Then I got it and realized what she was doing. The relationship was my favorite part of this book with him not remembering her and what happened as their relationship was evolving. You knew he would remember at some point. Actually, I think he took it really well when he discovered who she was and what had happened...maybe a little too quickly.

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments I thought so too. He forgave really fast but then again, he already made up his mind that she was gonna be his baby mama lol. And I don't think he tried all that hard to remember what happened. He was more invested in making Ava his.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11248 comments Mod
Good point, Quynh. He seemed to know immediately that they were fated to be forever. Jordan was really a great character. I love it when a really great looking guy is not only sweet & loving but also protective and alpha!

And funny to boot. Love a guy with humor. :)

Me too...I love the banter!
