50 Book Pledge discussion

I am still busy with coursework, so most of my reading is school-related right now and reading for pleasure has taken a bit of a back seat. But one of the books for class is Just Babies: The Origins of Good and Evil, and it's fascinating!

I am really hoping to be able to squeeze in some Canada Reads reading though, before the debates start in early March.

What are you reading right now? Any planned reading for later this month?

This year I'm trying to keep one nonfiction book & one classic going all the time: Currently they're Max Hastings's Catastrophe 1914 & J. H. Shorthouse's John Inglesant. My contemporary fiction choices are mostly crime fiction & supernatural/horror. At present they're Simon Beckett's The Chemistry of Death (this month's group read for the Kindle English Mystery Group) & Neil Spring's The Ghost Hunters, but I fear the last is about to get ditched because I made a New Year resolution not to read any books not worth at least 4 stars & Spring writes poorly.

Now reading Hawk Quest. It's a brick, but a very good one.

I'n in the middle of Snowblind by Christopher Golden, and waiting with anticipate for Path of Bones (Skullborn #2) by Steven Montano, which comes out on Thursday! :)

I've started with my shelved authors whose last name begins with B. I'm reading my M.C. Beaton cozy mysteries along with the tragic true story by Ingrid Betancourt of her time spent as a hostage by a terrorist organization in Columbia. I think I'll throw in some romances from my kindle for a few days next week to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Just getting into Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss.
I might finish it by the end of February...2015. ;)

Just started The Inventor and the Tycoon which would be #6. Purchased in December but only opened recently.

LOTS!!!!!! I think however my pace will slow down as I plan to start A Clash of Kings, and that is a really long book!

i began reading The Transcriptionist by Amy Rowland, last night. i had trouble putting it down and was riveted.

I just completed my ARC copy of " Savage Girl" by Jean Zimmerman. The publisher expects release in March 2014. It was one of the most unique mystery/tragic romances I have ever read. I'm still reading " After Lament" by Glenn Pemberton as part of my devotions. It's a book on the Psalms, about the lament ( asking God why the pain, hurt and despair of life, and the praise and worship that follows whether our prayers are answered or not. It is riveting.

I'm reading The Never List by Koethi Zan. It's a psychological thriller about four girls who were kidnapped and held in a cellar for five years. It's really good so far!

I just started Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. I was a big fan of The Tudors TV show, so I'm used to a more fast-paced, sexy and scandalous version of the Tudors. I wonder if this book be the same or more focused on the history. I'm about 80 pages in, so I'm thinking the latter.

Just finished a biography of the Sioux warrior Red Cloud and a beautiful chapbook by Kathleen Kirk, "Interior Sculpture: poems in the voice of Camille Claudel". I'm also reading Tania Runyan's "Second Sky" collection and will be starting Barbara Crooker's "Gold".

This is my first post to this group. I am in the middle of Story Engineering by Larry Brooks, because I want to learn how to better develop a Sci-fi novel that's in my head.

I am also reading the Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I am on A Study in Scarlet and it is great. I think that his work should have it's own class like Shakespeare or Chaucer. I bought this one on audible for 1 credit for 70+ hours of reading which is 9 books!

Just started Cockroaches by Jo Nesbo. Love his detective fiction. Wonderful author.

I'm doing a Harry Potter Re-read with some book blogger friends. I'm a little behind, but hoping to catch up this coming week. :)

Currently reading the Heart of Texas series by K. L. Hemley. It's a historical romantic western. Not normally what I read, but it was free in exchange for an honest review. So far, so good, but nothing extraordinary.

Hoping to read the Harry Potter series, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings series, and The Divergent seriesthis year. We'll see how it goes.

I'm reading Tales of Glass Town, Angria and Gondal by the Brontes. It's a collection of their juvenile works before they became established. I'm also re-reading The Hobbit because it's The Hobbit.

Currently reading the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. Didn't think I would like it but fantastic series so far!!

Now I'm onto An Officer and a Spy
So far it's very interesting.

I'm a Tolkien enthusiast, but I have never read The Hobbit lol.

I'm in the middle of The Adventures right now. The Case Of Identity was soo messed up. Particularly for the fact that Holmes knew there was no justice at the time that could punish the step-father. Funny how there aren't many fairy tales with evil step fathers in them. This one seems realistic. Although the mother was evil too.

I am behind a little on my goal but I am nearly finished #6 Cockroaches by Jo Nesbo.

I just finished Annihilation. I really enjoyed Annihilation and can't wait for book 2 of the trilogy.

I'm currently reading James Brady's historical nonfiction book " The Scariest Place in the World: A Marine Returns to North Korea" and Honore de Balzac' "Pere Goriot". I'm still working through the alphabet and have pulled a stack of C ( by author) books for next month including the Lee Child Reacher series. I lament I have not emptied more of my shelf space. I have 8 bags of books to donate to my local library bookstore though and feel pretty good about this.

Just started Ann Patchett's State of Wonder - great read so far!!!

I'm WAY behind on my challenge for 2014; having just finished my second book: James Potter and the Morrigan Web.
I've now moved on to Haunted by Kelley Armstrong. Hoping this will be a quick read.
