Maple (maplerie) | 307 comments I just started reading Brave New World. I picked this book because I've been meaning to read it for a long time, and this week worked perfect to slip it into. I'm not very far into it, but it's pretty good so far. The first few pages reminded me of 1984, just in the description of the landscape. I know a lot of people have compared the two to each other. Hopefully these aren't too similar where I find myself constantly comparing them as I go.

Adriana Pereira (adrianacecilia) It's a great book, I hope to enjoy it!
I see the comparison between both as some sort of "which is most likely to happen". I liked them both, though Orwell seems a bit boring to read at times.

Bana AZ (anabana_a) | 414 comments I read 1984 before I read this book. I did compare them a little, but they're different enough to not feel like a waste of time to read both. Brave New World is actually my favorite dystopian novel. I hope you'll like it till the end of the book. :)

Maple (maplerie) | 307 comments Thanks! I'm really excited about this book, but it's been pretty slow going. It's not the book's fault at all. What little I've been able to read of it has been really good! I recently got a promotion at work, so I'm working more hours and have more to do during the day, and I'm also getting ready to move, so all my free time is being taken up by other life things. I feel wrong with so much less book time, but that'll change soon.

Bana AZ (anabana_a) | 414 comments Oh, yes. The problem of life getting in the way. Congats on the promotion though. :)

Grace Meredith (koreantrash) My dad absolutely adores this book, so I'm reading it for the week where you pick a book your parent loves. It's just about the last 'classic' dystopian I have left to try.

Maple (maplerie) | 307 comments I actually finished this awhile ago, I'm just now getting a chance to get back to the group though. The book was great. In mind I kept comparing it to 1984 and The Twilight Zone (episode "Number 12 Looks Just Like You"). It wasn't one of my favorite dystopian novels but I still liked. Because I read this at a slower pace than I normally devour a book, I think I had troubles connecting with the characters and the story just seemed to drag on at times.

JackAttack Hmm. Hmmmmmm. My thoughts on this book are very jumbled. I liked it - I know I did because I honestly couldn't put this book down. When I'm reading older 'classics' I typically read another book at the same time to take a break from the dense writing. Not with this one - I blew through it in a day. So something hooked me.

The idea behind this book - crazy genius. Extreme genetic engineering, confusion of the roles of civilized v. uncivilized people, gender roles...SO much going on here. There were several ideas/parts of the book that made me uncomfortable (erotic play? Hide the zipper?)- but I'm guessing that was purposeful? Definitely made me turn the pages.

But damn there were too many passages that were difficult to read through. The writing seems very dated/boring.

Recommend it - especially for those that enjoy older classics. Can say I definitely enjoyed more than the other dystopian classic I read this year - 1984. Enjoyed neither as much as my (so far) favorite dystopian classic This Perfect Day by Ira Levin.
