So when Frank was about 12=years=old or there abouts he read a review about how terribly awful was this record from Edgard Varèse. Which only meant for a devious=minded kind of tyke, that he simple had to go out and get it placed on his turn-table. I'm not certain which one it was, but it is likely it could've been Ionisation. [note the finneganism in the video=description, "his aurtobigraphy".] So but anyways, Frank falls deeply and hopelessly in love with this record ; a case as serious as any and every case of teenage-love. So deep was his love for the music of Varèse that not only did he write (phone?) Mr Varèse, who happened to be out of the country at the time so he spoke with Ed's wife, but he also employed this record to vet his Friends. Give it a spin -- So, whadya think? == thumbs down and he'd never speak to that kid again. I do the same with Finnegans Wake and about a dozen other books.....Here is a Young (sophisticat!) So you need an introduction to the work of Herr Zappa? His quad=disc'd album Läther (his 65th) should do fine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53PzR0...
"Zit-causing bug bears Frank Zappa's name"http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2014/02...
"It’s also not the first time that a critter has been named in honor of Zappa. Forty years ago, a mollusk extinct for 300 million years ago was named Amaurotoma zappa; a quarter century ago, a new genus of fish was named Zappa. The Zappa name has also been bestowed upon jellyfish and spiders. Astronomers even named an asteroid 3834 Zappafrank after the rock legend....
"In one of his most controversial songs, Zappa sung of wanting a Jewish princess with “sand-blasted zits.” He often referenced germs in his lyrics because he lived near a chemical warfare facility as a child."
This is just sooo right.

Penguin in Bondage was my intro to our Zappatastic'er. Among all of his others, it has a nice Finnegan Flavor.
Mabye no one noticed but I've coup'd a thread herre so I can talk about Frank frankly. I've got a piece here from 1971 which Frank wrote about Varese. That should be all you need to know byway of an excuse to read this short essay. "Edgard Varese: The Idol of My Youth" By Frank Zappa,
Stereo Review, June 1971. pp61-62.

To make your reading of the essay enjoyable, here's a Frank concert which you absolutely should not miss ::
"Frank Zappa & Ensemble Modern - The Yellow Shark, Live, 1992 in Frankfurt", German television; or, You Can't Broadcast That Anymore!
I cannot stress enough how absolutely positively awesome this concert is. This is what Frank spent 25 years trying to be able to afford to do.
