Kristine In 1948 Time and The New York Times gave Truman Capote's first published novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms, bad reviews. As with everything I've read by Capote, I really loved it. I was totally immersed in the atmosphere of this Southern Gothic, coming-of-age story from the very first paragraph. Beautiful prose, vivid characterization, compelling voice. Many elements of the genre present, including innocence trumped by desperation, broken bodies and broken souls, stranger in a strange place, imprisonment, isolation, the macabre, and the grotesque. Also fits in these Reading Challenge categories: a book written by someone under 30, a popular author's first book.

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments I've loved what I've read of Truman Capote's work as well (Breakfast at Tiffany's & In Cold Blood) - I'm definitely wanting to read this too. Your synopsis makes it sound very appealing!

Sophie (sawphie) I've never read Capote, maybe I should try (and I want to read more classics). Which one do you think I should start with?

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments I think Breakfast at Tiffany's - it's short (pretty sure it's classified as a novella), and it's wonderful!

Sophie (sawphie) Ok thanks Jody, it's going straight to my TBR!

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments I hope you like it! Incidentally, I didn't like the movie at all, but absolutely loved the book.

I recommend the short story "The Thanksgiving Visitor." It's so beautiful. You can usually find it in a collection with "A Christmas Memory," which is also good.

Sophie (sawphie) Thanks, I added them!
