Firstly, I'm going to nominate Metropole under the "Hungarian" theme, as the author is.... Hungarian.
Fatelessness - controversial holocaust memoir about puberty whilst at auschwitz(Hungarian Nobel prize winning author)
Memoirs by Georg Solti the great Hungarian conductor, pianist and recording artist. His 'story'.Edward Teller: The Real Dr. Strangelove the Hungarian father of the 'H-bomb'.
Two auto/bio type works.
Matterhorn, The Killer's Tears (Cape Horn setting), No Greater Love (Horn of Africa)and for Hungary,
The Door, Under the Frog
I can see this is going to be an awesome (and huge) list. There are several there I'd be happy to read..

Nice use of "H"s there too, BTW.

I was waiting for you to nominate that, so I wouldn't have to :)

if we're allowed 3rd picks, Falling Angel - the book that became Angel Heart, one of the best occult movies ever made and the film that seriously pissed off Bill Cosby this is filed under Horns cause the devil is in the back ground and there's horns on the cover

It seemed like the category was tailer made for it :-)
Lots of great picks here. Of the nominations, I've read "Under the Frog" and "Falling Angel". Both were good. I used to own the uncut version of 'Angel Heart' on VHS as well. Loved that movie.

I haven't seen it since the days of VHS but it keeps coming up in conversation so I think it's time for a rediscovery
I'll nominate War & War for my Hungarian selection (same author as Satantango).
And The 120 Days of Sodom by Marquis de Sade for my horn-y selection.

I'm not having much success with books worth recommending of the horn variety. So I suppose somebody must mention the 'Horatio Hornblower' books by C.S. Forester.link to the Captain Hornblower series in order:

Oh! The one 'good' horn book that I can think of that hasn't been added I see:The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle.
Thanks guys. I feel compelled to add something by Péter Esterházy. I haven't read any of his books yet, but there seem to be several of them on my TBR.
A Little Hungarian Pornography
A Little Hungarian Pornography
Like we always do, Richard. With a great deal of complaining and changing of votes. :)
The nominations are closed, and the poll is now open here:

It's being a bit tricky & not appearing in the Polls section or Group home page right now - probably just a timezone thing.
Please note the closing date for votes - 18Feb.
(-ish. Time zones again)

I have only one comment: that image of deer skulls in your opening post is off-topic. Deer have antlers, not horns!

Anyway, to keep things fresh I've been thinking about using alphabetical themes, but to make it just a little more chaotic, we'll be pitting two themes of that letter against each other. Sound confusing? Well alrighty then.
Let's just jump into it, and you'll see what I mean..
This time the letter is "H", and the two themes we've got to work with are "Hungarians" and "Horns".
All you have to do is nominate books that you'd like as a group read, which in some way link to either of those themes. For each book that you nominate, let us know which theme you think it fits, (Hungarians or Horns), and why.
For example, you might nominate "I, Goat" for the category "horns", because goats have horns, and, well, there's a goat in the title. Or perhaps the author of the book you've nominated is a Hungarian. Or maybe it's the main character of the book who's a disznófősajt-eater (look it up people), or the book is all about how to blow a French Horn.
Get it? Good.
The intention is to generate a great and varied list of books from which to select our next Group Read, (and possibly an awesome and eclectic group bookshelf too).
Everybody gets to nominate up to 5 books each in total. Nominations will close in about a week, at which point I'll post a Group Poll for us to vote on our preferred read.
Enjoy!
