Which fiction novels/series about ghosts are your favorites? Why?

I love the old classic ghost stories. I feverishly collect these anthologies. One of my favorites was Oxford's English Ghost Stories. It has some great ones in there, guaranteed to scare you or give you unease.

MR James was an English author who wrote incredible ghost stories. I highly recommend him.

One of the scariest ghost stories I ever read was The Whistling Room by William Hope Hodgson.

I hope you enjoy them. The British really know how to tell some scary ghost stories.

I'm reading a historical romance, sort of a romantic comedy that has a ghost. The Wedding Ghost by Cindy Holbrook. Its light-hearted and witty.

Peony in Love is fabulous if you are already a fan of Chinese literature. What an interesting ghost story!

I just finished by Megan Hart. It is not a woo, woo kind of ghost. I dont even know if you can describe him as a ghost. But is is a haunting story about two people and the love that might have, or might not have been. It is a really good book, but if you've ever read Megan Hart you know not to expect a typical HEA ending.

Stephanie I'm glad that you've confirmed what I suspected from reading the excerpts from this book...Many people on here were scared of reading this book even tho' they didn't know what it was about but a ghost love doesn't bother me.

This is one of her earlier books,published in the early 1990s I think,and is a romance with both a good ghost and a stalker of the Moms daughter.

Bods parents are murdered when he is only 18 mo old but he toddles to a nearby graveyard and the ghosts take him in,adopt him ,take very good care of him and teach him to survive there and on the outside too as he matures.5* book and so is the whole series

I read a ghost story for a group during Halloween called The Woman in Black: A Ghost Story. I loved the story. It was so creepy I had the urge to sleep with my lights on. LOL. My husband would have laughed me out of bed.

My hubby says he knows when I read a scary book because the nightmare sends me burrowing under him and he has to push me out so he can stay in the bed too

I thought A Certain Slant of Lightwas an great book about ghosts. I wouldn't say it is my favorite, but it was one I read recently and thought was interesting!

I really loved this book,it`s about a teen thatwas murdered and how her Ghost helps her family get thru her death and find her killer.

Kathy Anne: How was the book compared to the movie? I have the book, however, I plan to watch the movie first. It always seems a let down when I read a book and then watch the movie...

I love the manga The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service by Eiji Otsuka & Housui Yamazaki.

M.....I didn`t get to see the movie yet but people I have asked usually don`t like book or movie,so I guess we have to wait and see.

Sure thing Kathy Anne :) I just got the movie, and I watched the beginning. Very surreal... a bit confusing, but I'll have to finish the movie to see how it goes. My DVD player is acting up, so I wasn't able to finish it.

Oh, another good ghost story book is the historical fiction haunted house graphic novel 1140 Rue Royal.

I just finished The Killing Room which was pretty creepy. It has ghosts and evil forces. I really liked it.

ummmm, not fictional, but Haunted Missouri by Jason Offutt is awesome! I even went to some of the places while I was there, and you could just .....feel the presence of someone.....loved it!

Just finished The Restorer by Amanda Stevens, which was very enjoyable.

I will definitely have to try some of these! lol although maybe wait till the hubby is home, since i scare easy hehe

My favortie ghost stories are by Sheridan LeFanu the Irish writter from 1800s Dublin. The Irish/Celts love their ghost stories, and the Irish & Scotts tell the best. In a Glass Darkly which is told in the form of a collection of case studies by the occult doctor Martin Hesselius ends with Carmilla. It is so bitchin cool. Some really great stories.

Defending Angels . This is the first book in a series, i think 5 are out. A lawyer handles cases for the dead. lots of ghosts and angels.

Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill is pretty good. It's about a rock star who is obsessed with the macabre, and he orders a haunted suit in a heart shaped box off Ebay. And the ghost is pretty wicked.

Also, The House on Tradd Street by Karen White is a historical romance/mystery/ghost story that is a good light read. Set in Charleston's historic district.
Has a sequel called The House on Legare Street.

Nathaniel by John Saul is good too.

Heather Graham writes a lot of mysteries with ghosts. One of my favorite was her Bone Island Trilogy. I just did a review of her 3rd book in The Krewe Hunters series.

I loved Bag of Bones by Stephen King. I am not a huge horror fan usually and do not read his books. I found this book to be more mystery, psychological thriller than his books often are.

Ghosts on the Red Line by Peter David Shapiro is a good read. (Full disclosure: I wrote it, so I'm biased.) As readers have pointed out, it's not a typical ghost story since there are plausible non-spectral explanations for the visitations that occur on Boston's Red Line subway trains. On the other hand, for the people who experience the visitations, they are very real. There is suspense, or so I'm told: Readers claim to be caught up in the search for the source of the visitations. Eventually after the source is found and the MBTA moves to block future visitations on the Red Line, the protagonist and his ex-wife seek to create special locations for the visitations to continue including, they hope, from their daughter who has appeared to them as the teenager she might have become if she had lived. Then other characters get involved including the Archbishop of Boston, politicians in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, a high-profile Boston psychic, and a notorious gangster. The Name of the Star is a good one. I'd tell you who the ghost was, but it would spoil the whole story xD

Shirley Jackson The Haunting of Hill House is one of the best ghost stories ever written.

The Omen by David Seltzer is one of the scariest I read. The atmosphere is really well created in that one. The Amityville Horror is also quite scary, because of the strong anticipatory buildup.
The House Next Door by Ann Rivers Siddons is also a good horror story, and of course Bram Stoker's Dracula is vintage.

This was a really good ghost story.

Are we talking about ghost stories, like amityville? Or books where ghosts are present, and surround the main character but not in a malevolent way?

I love Megan Hart's writing! My favorite is Broken (no ghosts in it), but will definitely check this one out. Thanks!

The Haunting Season by Michelle Muto is a great New Adult ghost story. I loved it and so did my 19 year old daughter. If any of you want to check it out, it's on sale for 99¢ today. Not quite free, but close ;)
