I teach children. I teach Enrichment which used to be titled Gifted/Talented. I am often asked what should my high functioning reader be reading. That is difficult. Many books that are higher in complexity have issues meant for older children which are inappropriate for younger children. Sometimes I tell parents to look to the classics, C.S.Lewis, Barrie etc. Books that deal with ethical situations are full of discussion topics that I recommend parents read with their child to teach them how to be critical readers and pull from the literature essential values. Shiloh is a book I love to read to 3-5th graders talking about the ethical decisions the protagonist has to make and would they chose a different path?
