Yeah, me too. At first I was like, "what kind of group is this" lol. I was worried. It didn't seem like a real group at first.
Maybe there could be a new name for it, or a message about what the group is about sent with the invite (like what is mentioned above) I think it would help new members.
I'm not sure about the links aspect, I just clicked on one group that had something to do with a website--is that the same thing? They are
getting lots of hits too I'm sure, of course, all of the authors on the site are marketing their work, so every time they add a friend, they are adding a potentional buyer. Most people don't have 966 friends,
Internet Scams: My experince:(
I for one, have had a very bad experience recently with a SCAMMER. It was a devastating experience. "I am writing my memoir and have some of my story on the internet in hopes of locating someone I love, well a person claimed to be that person I have been searching for, over the past 9 years, and it totally made me go over the edge for a few weeks. My life just came to a hault. We are still trying to track this person down, even with his IP address, it is difficult.
So, be careful!
I have links to where internet crimes can be reported to if anyone would like them posted in this group? Maybe it would be a way to bring other group members in, as a resource, to reaise awarness.
Enjoy your week everyone,
Happy reading & writing!

Originally this group was created by a spammer that had nefarious purposes. The GoodReads team removed him from Goodreads and deleted all of his groups except this one that slipped past him. During the void I came by and took over as moderator since the group had none and GoodReads allows members to step into vacated positions.
Afterwords I changed the name and intent of the group and removed his url so he will no longer benefit from his group.
And yes, feel welcome to post on anything anti-spam or internet crime!

This is hilarious Nick, I like the irony in your action. You should write a story about it. Seriously though, I have been really careful in offering my book to people. I can see the potential to spam people badly with book recommendations and such on here. I have found getting involved and such tends to promote sales. Showing people what I read and such. I just have lots of fun on this site. At the end of the day, enjoying a good book is what this whole thing is about. =)
The guy spamming in this regard wasn't an author. To be honest, I have no idea what exactly his goals were. He was weird...
