Burc Uygurmen In fact, people do not care about what you say; they only care about how you make them feel. That’s the reason our words don’t have the same permanent impact as our behaviors. We understand what’s been said, but we remember how we were treated and and how we felt.

We actually go to a concert because of the feelings that we are going to have by being there. The song lyrics only matter insofar as they have meaning for us, no matter how impressive they may be. We can say the same thing about a public speaker. We are more interested in listening to a role model who can influence us rather than the phrasemongering that we are going to get.

Now, before your next conversation, ask yourself: do you think your excitement should be only about the things you are going to say? Or should it be more about the value you are going to add by being a role model, able to influence the person you’re speaking with?
