Trisha | 30284 comments Author Spotlight: R.L. Stine

RLStine

Challenge date: August 1st - October 31st

R.L. Stine is the amazing author of Goosebumps Series, Fear Street Series and many others. In honor of a movie getting ready to come out for the Goosebumps series, I thought we'd do this author next!

1. Stine began writing stories at the age of 9, using an old typewriter that he found.

read a book with a 9 in the page count
or a book with 9 in year of publication

2. He initially made up jokes and humorous stories because he wanted to be a cartoonist when he grew up.

read a book that lists "funny" on the main genre page or
read a book with horror, thriller or mystery on the main page genre

3. Stine has described himself as "a very fearful child," and said that his mother gave him one of his first serious frights by reading Pinocchio. "The original Pinocchio is terrifying ... He goes to sleep with his feet on the stove and burns his feet off!"

read a paranormal or fantasy book
read a traditional or re-telling of a fairytale

4. In New York, Stine worked as a writer and editor. He eventually landed a position at Scholastic, Inc., working on children's magazines. He created a humor magazine for kids called Bananas.

read a book with any type of food on the cover
read a book with pictures in it (manga, graphic novel, magazine, cookbook, middle grade, etc)

5. Stine launched his first horror book series for young adults, Fear Street, in 1989. Described as "where your worst nightmares lives."

read a book with something you fear either as plot or on the cover
read a book where the main character is afraid of something
(Bonus points for reading a Fear Street book!)

6. In 1992, Stine started taking younger readers on their own thrill ride with the Goosebumps series.

read a book with title or author name that starts with R, L, S or G
read a book labeled Young Adult

7. The only green thing R.L. Stine will eat is Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream.

read a book with a green cover
read a book with a cover of your favorite color

8. He doesn't go to scary movies because he laughs at them. His only fear, a phobia really, is of swimming pools. He won't jump in them.

read a book with a blue cover
read a book with some type of liquid on the cover

9. One of R.L. Stine's biggest surprises was the Goosbumps series. He originally wrote it for girls. But when the fan mail started rolling in, they realized it was from 50% boys and 50% girls - one of the few MG Series where the readership is even.

Read a book with a Female POV
Red a book with a male POV

10. When he first started writing, one of his favorite authors used his initials as his pen name. So R.L. Stine did the same.

Read a book where the author lists a middle initial
Read a book where the author has 3 full names listed

Read a book where the author lists a middle initial
Will You Be My Friend? (You're Invited to a Creepover, #20) by P.J. Night

I should note that I probably won't be as fast as the previous challenge. I am kind of putting all my new books (and some older books) away for my vacation (only about 3 weeks to go!), which means I barely have any books to read at the moment (currently mostly reading manga or just reading less).

So I will probably start with this challenge right before I leave for my vacation and then when I come back and have good internet again I will update the post.

EDIT: I am back home and I have finished this challenge! :D
