the merpeople of the Caribbean are ruthless creatures that are fully at home in the water. They are siren-like, except they appear more innocent. They use their voices to lure, trap, and drag sailors down to a watery grave. Many of them can adopt claws and fangs, ideal for ripping up human flesh. Their mandate consists of meat, and most who follow societal norms will feed on humans; others will chose smaller fish. Large fish, such as the sharks and the swordfish are highly respected creatures among the merpeople, and so they do not feed on them. Merpeople are brought up being kept isolated and separated from the human world, with little to no human contact. Upon coming into contact with complete dryness, a merperson’s tail and gills, and anything else that may discern them from humans will disappear, along with the water on them. Merpeople can walk on land disguised as humans, but most need to go back to the water within a certain number of hours, lest they should die from a lack of water.

the humans in the world above the sea live lives and humans would have done in the seventeenth century. Many live perfectly normal lives in either Port Royal or London, under safety of His Majesty the king of England. Many humans make a living out of working as blacksmiths, butchers or bartenders in port royal. Others work as traders for the East India Company, suppling Port Royal with utmost necessities from Europe one their several trips to and from the Caribbean and England. They are not aware that merpeople are anything more than legends.

pirates are the beings that plague the Caribbean ocean. They loot towns and destroy ships to steal their gold and to enslave people to sell them off to the highest bidder in the town of their next docking. Each Captain has their own, personalised 'Jolly Roger' or flag, which they will raise when approaching foreign ships, to let them consider the fact that they're pretty much doomed. They are in constant combat with the King's Royal Navy, whose purpose is to kill and hang as many pirates as they can, to save the trade.

in constant combat with pirates is the King's Royal Navy, whose purpose is to carry out trade from the Trading Company and ensure it gets to port royal, as well as acting as the police of Port Royal when the seas are calmer. The Royal Navy serve King and Country only, nobody else, and only the best sailors, marksmen and fighters are selected to ail the high seas with chalk-white sails. The Royal Navy is the armada of protection for the East India Trading Company, as well as being responsible for the safety of Port Royal.
