2015 Reading Challenge [Closed] discussion

Jeanette Winterson usually makes me cry, so I'm guessing this one will too... I'm about halfway through and I don't think I've had any actual tears yet, but there's been some pricking at the back of the eyeballs.

Winterson has a way of packing the best and the worst of human experience into a sentence. Melancholy and joy twine together in her work, and though she's somewhat weird, and inaccessible, and dramatic, her work always speaks to me. Maybe because I'm somewhat weird, and inaccessible, and dramatic. Maybe we all are.

Finally finished this one! Didn't make me cry till the very end. Weird book. Still digesting it. Lots of beauty and amazing passages but very little in the way of plot to hang on to. I felt lost through most of it, which I think was kind of the point- she stranded her readers on this one, making us grasp at anything to stay afloat, much as the traumatized characters are experiencing time- fragmented, nonsensical, lit up in brief moments. I give it four stars but am not entirely sure I "recommend" it as it is such a surreal reading experience...
