Fiction: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini or The Color Purple by Alice Walker

Classic: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Non-fiction: Night by Elie Wiesel

for fiction, i'd like to recommend Half of a Yellow Sun because we already know Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is flawless. :)
