In my Bible it has a summary before every book. It says the theme for Romans is announced in 1:16-17: the gospel is God's power for salvation, because it shows us that the righteousness of God is through faith for all who believe. :)
Wow guys! When I thought about reading Romans I completely forgot how brilliant and wonderfully powerful this book was!! Avery you are right, it gives the clear way to salvation while also showing what and how sin acts. This first chapter started off fast huh. You are also right Matt! That's some hard course warnings!
I really like verse 22- "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools." Isn't that so clearly seen in today's society!! I mean we always see those so called, "brilliant" professors and scientists and etc and they all call themselves wise yet they miss the key point of living- realizing their Maker and learning their one purpose and utter happiness! What do y'all think?

Thanks(:
I was particularly intrigued by verse 12. Paul of course was giving greetings however I am very curious on what this verse means? Any opinions?

The clue is the first two words, "that is..." He's clarifying what he started saying in verse 8 - that by visiting the church in Rome, he can encourage and be encouraged by showing his faith and by seeing theirs.
Oh I got it. That is good! It is cool how he talks to them as close friends yet he may have met few people in these churches to which he is writing!
1:18-32 yes, very strong warnings. I feel like a lot of people in todays culture need to read these verses.
He speaks of God's coming wrath on the wicked in 18-22 but I'd rather people read verses 16 and 17 -- the gospel of Christ is the power of God for salvation.

verse 24: "For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you..."A neighbor had this bumper sticker: "Lord preserve me from Your believers"
You all have some awesome thoughts, thanks for sharing. I'm actually behind because I've been gone all day and have been crazy busy the past two days and will be again tomorrow. I'll try to catch up today.
Verse 1-4 reminds me of Lord's prayer - forgive us our debts,as we also have forgiven our debtors - which i can relate.
Another thing this chapter talks about is being real, Real Christian, like our group's name. Agree to @Matt as well. Christians are tired and scared of fellow christians. One believer hardly trust another, they are self seeking but this chapter just talk opposite of it, a changed human not outwardly or physically but inside out.
Wow guys!! So brilliant!! This is some powerful stuff here!! I'm with Tamara, been so busy today I haven't had a moment sadly. But I'm going to do it(:
This is thoroughly brilliant! I completely agree! The problem with most of the world is what Jesus talks about in the Bible about those who are lukewarm, which he shall spew out of his mouth. And sadly enough this scenario is catching more and more and honestly the only thing to stop it is Real Christians who preach the Real Gospel!(: Love this conversation guys!

I'm really encouraged by how much you're all sharing with us! I love all that you're getting from just the first chapters, I can't wait to finish the whole book together! :)
Ch 3:25-27 -- no "religion" has Jesus, has one man who died and resurrected, who became the propitiation, the atonement, the appeasement for sin. v27 -- a free gift, nothing you can earn, only accept.I was on a mission trip in Montreal where we do a LifeFest with Calvary Chapel Montreal -- free food, bounces, games, music. One man was adamant about donating money, but we don't take any. So he went to a nearby Children's Hospital, donated a sum, and returned to tell us.
It's a good thing to help the hospital, but it is a bad thing to do it in order to "pay" for the free gift. Then the gift is no longer valid, it's not a gift. There's no amount of money that could pay for this gift.
