Time to recommend books for September's Book of the Month. This thread will close in a week and the poll will go up afterwards. Thanks!

Wendy Cooper | 64 comments Murder at Avadon Hill by PG Holyfield. It's a murder mystery, but set in another time, in another land, where magic exists. I've listened and read and really enjoyed it. Problem is, it's a bit pricey on the ol Amazon. But I did find http://podiobooks.com/title/murder-at...
Description:
Lord Avedon has a problem. Generations of Avedons have watched over Avedon Hill and controlled the only pass through the Lantis Mountains. Traditions are important to the Avedon family, but one tradition has tragically come to an end. Gretta Platt, Housemistress of Avedon Manor, has been murdered. A member of the Platt family has always served the Avedons as Housemistress. until now. Only a handful of people live at Avedon Hill, and most are suspects. Arames Kragen, retired Aarronic Advisor and scholar of prophecy, arrives at the gates of Avedon Hill, hoping to gain access to the mountain pass. Lord Avedon is not in a giving mood, however.

This is the story of Arames Kragen and his attempt not only to discover who killed Gretta Platt, but also to uncover the truth about a town that apparently has more secrets than inhabitants.

The Land of Caern: It is a world where the gods, the Children of Az, can choose to be born as mortals to directly affect events in the world, and often do. It is a world where the Priests of Caern frantically search for the mortal incarnations of any of the Children, in order prevent the Prophecies of Iberian from coming to pass.

Welcome to The Land of Caern... Welcome... to Murder at Avedon Hill, the podcast novel by P.G. Holyfield.

Trent Bellott | 11 comments I will bring back up a book someone recommended before A Nameless Witch by A. Lee Martinez. A very enjoyable read.

Rudolph Hall | 14 comments Have y'all considered Ender's Game? Or how about a Flemming James Bond novel?

message 6: by Jesse (new)

Jesse | 8 comments I second Ender's Game. Great book.

Rodney | 208 comments Mod
Rudolph, you get one pitch. We will say you submitted Enders game since you mentioned it first and someone seconded. Also, I'm not sure bond would be a Sci fi. Anyway, one pitch per person.
Also, please read my comments in thread with same snarkiness I use in episodes. I'm merely poking fun.

message 8: by Rudolph (new)

Rudolph Hall | 14 comments Sorry for the newbi mistake. I won't let it happen again. Learning the ropes here.

Rodney | 208 comments Mod
Not a problem. Sorry I had to come down hard you.

message 10: by Matt (new)

Matt | 150 comments Do the books have to be sci fi? Bond isn't sci fi, but it is somewhat geeky. The same would go for Sherlock Holmes. I don't have a recommendation in either of those franchises, because I haven't read any of the former, and I've only read a few short stories from the latter. But I'm curious what the "rules" are that determine which books can or can't be nominated.

message 11: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Beaty | 33 comments I would second (third) Ender's Game. A more adult alternative would be Game of Thrones.

Any book can be nominated and nominations don't have to be seconded. There will be a poll with the books that have been nominated.

message 13: by John (new)

John Stinebaugh The Faded Sun by CJ Cherryh.

Jennifer (jenlynn97) | 60 comments The Cuckoo's Calling by JK Rowling, since Steve said it didnt have to be sci fi?

message 15: by SciFiNow (new)

SciFiNow | 89 comments I third Enders Game as well especially since Steve mentioned he had not read it. Its a must read for any fan of sci fi. It is followed up by many other books but Enders Game is definitely a stand alone.

message 16: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jenlynn97) | 60 comments (This is not a nomination) I enjoyed Speaker for the Dead more than Ender's Game. Speaker might be my favorite book of all time.

Rodney | 208 comments Mod
Jennifer that's awesome. I thought I was only one that really enjoyed speaker for the dead. Was an excellent book. Series did lose after awhile though.

message 23: by Nathan (new)

You guys make my head hurt. It's real simple: you nominate books (any genre), those books go on a poll, you vote on the poll and we read the winner.

message 25: by Rodney (new)

Rodney | 208 comments Mod
This is why you scare me

message 26: by Nathan (new)

Nathan | 34 comments We understand how it works. We're just having fun discussing it :)

I enjoyed the following books but in my opinion they are clearly no comparison to enders game, enders game is a masterpiece. I only nominate it because i think its a must read for everyone.

Josh Luecht | 1 comments I nominate

Armada: A Novel by Ernest Cline

Zack Lightman has spent his life dreaming. Dreaming that the real world could be a little more like the countless science-fiction books, movies, and videogames he’s spent his life consuming. Dreaming that one day, some fantastic, world-altering event will shatter the monotony of his humdrum existence and whisk him off on some grand space-faring adventure.

But hey, there’s nothing wrong with a little escapism, right? After all, Zack tells himself, he knows the difference between fantasy and reality. He knows that here in the real world, aimless teenage gamers with anger issues don’t get chosen to save the universe.

And then he sees the flying saucer.
