Alan | 2 comments Can anyone whose read it answer this. In the short story roog are the bin men just plain bin men or does the dog know something everyone else doesn't. Or alternatively is it just left ambiguous??

Michael | 88 comments Ambiguous.

I read it as a story about personal perception and frame of reference.

To the dog, the bin men are alien, other and sinister invaders of his territory. To humans, they are refuse collectors performing a benign social function, but maybe there is an underlying reality that the dog perceives and his human masters are ignorant of.

PKD toying with the notion of reality from the outset of his writing career.

Alan | 2 comments Thanks. I believed Boris was just confused and there was in fact nothing sinister about the 'roogs', except for following..

"The contents poured out onto the ground, and the Roogs scooped the sacks of bulging, splitting paper together, catching at the orange peels and fragments, the bits of toast and egg shells.

One of the Roogs popped an egg shell into his mouth. His teeth crunched the egg shell".

Perhaps the dogs perception has just been warped as he is confused, or are the roogs truly eating old egg shells??? I like the way its left open to personal interpretation.
