I'm not sure if you've heard of her,but my favorite writer, whom I came across when I was 17, is Kathleen Woodiwiss. By far, she's the best I've seen in both descriptive and staying loyal to the language of old. Her best, Shanna, which stayed on the new york times best seller list for more than a year, is my favorite, maybe because it was my first, but even after a twenty year pause to raise my children,FYI, that's how addicted of a reader I am, I have not come across any books I like, much less love. However, I would not start with Shanna, try PETALS ON THE RIVER, its sweet, simplistic, but well loved. THE WOLF AND DOVE, is another of mine, not fully for the story that takes place in 1066, but its language. In total, Ms. Woodiwiss wrote 12 books, you may not like all the stories, but reading for me is about more than the story, its the rhythm, the music, the words, the descriptive and the heart. odd, I know, but what can I say, my brain seem wired that way? Another author you might want to look at is Julie Garwood, a different style writer, but her stories are like a tale given by your favorite aunt. FOR THE ROSES, LION'S LADY are a few of my favorites, enjoy!Let me know what you think.
@B. Thanks for the recommendation! I've read authors like Judith McNaught, Suzanne Enoch, Christina Dodd and a few more...have heard a lot about Julie Garwood:) And definitely gonna try out Kathleen Woodiwiss!
I read Kathleen Woodiwiss way back when. My favorite was Ashes In The Wind but I believe Shanna was the one everybody loved.
You liked Ashes In The Wind over A Rose In Winter? While the sharp spunk of a girl willing to cut off her hair and travel across country for a purpose can't be frowned upon, the layers in the other is a much better read. One lie given both to help and to gain, spiraled further to unfold the traps skillfully set in other lies and, of course, her style of writing cannot be snuffed. So worthy My love is another with a spitfire for a lead. If you haven't already read it, you should. Enjoy!
I never read A Rose In Winter. I read some of her books as a teenager and for some reason that I do not remember I just stopped reading them. Maybe I will read it now.
I just finished reading The Smuggler Wore Silk by Alyssa Alexander and enjoyed the read. This is her first historical romance.

Johanna Lindsey if you like to be infuriated and amused at the same time. Her characters are exasperating but she makes great dialogue. Funny most of the times! ;)

Awww! ;p I love her... okay, not all... there are a few books that I gave up on as well! But she was the reason why got hooked on Historical Romance.
WHAT ABOUT JULIA QUINN? :D
If you truly like historical novels with a touch of humor, you should read Georgette Heyer. She's simply wonderful. Her books The Grand Sophy Frederica Arabella These Old Shades Devil's Cub Friday's Childand the list is endless, truly wonderful books with lovely main lead characters.

Sorry,I know I am a bit (?) late to reply.I would suggest Amanda Quick. Plots might look a bit repetitive. But I enjoy her books.
I was actually looking for a pdf version of Shanna! Can anybody help? If not pdf then an online version will do! I read like 10 pages online and then the 'preview' ended and left me hanging!
