Rules
- This challenge will run from 1 March 2014 - 28 February 2015. Any books finished during that time are eligible.
- You can read anything (as long it’s 150+ pages) but to use the book for this challenge, you have to take a photograph that represents the book in one of the following ways:
- Re-create the cover Text-based covers are not allowed. There has to be some kind of image you can replicate and photograph. BUT you cannot create a digital image to use.
- Re-create an important scene from the book. Don’t take a picture of your friend in their car just because the main character drove somewhere. However, if the novel is about a road trip, then a picture of a car on the long road would be perfect.
- Someone dressed up as a major character. Only if this character is described in detail or pictured on the cover. You can’t just be a woman in jeans and a t-shirt.
- A key location from the book. This doesn’t have to be the exact location, but it has to be important and fit the description of the book. Don’t take a picture of your kitchen just because you character drinks coffee in their kitchen at some point. However, you can use a picture of a school for a novel that takes place at one, assuming the schools are similar (ie. don't photograph a private school, when the school in the novel is a ramshackle building in a rural village).
- An important item or creature from the story. For example, if the story is about a man and his beloved dog, you can take a picture of your dog. But don’t use your Miniature Maltese Poodle if the dog in the novel is a Rottweiler.
- All pictures must be your own or taken by someone for you. You can’t download one.
- You may edit the picture. Adding text for covers is optional.
- You can’t re-use a picture, or take another picture of the same thing for a different book.
- You may use props/toys.
- Provide quote(s) from the book to explain your photo, where relevant
- Use ONE planning post here, and post all your updates in the Updates and Chat thread
Sharing
- Do not post your pictures here. Post them on the private Pinterest board created for the challenge: http://www.pinterest.com/violininavoi...
- If you don't want to use Pinterest, please send me your images and I will post them for you.
- I will grant access to the Pinterest board to all group members - just send me your email address.
Guidelines:
- Imagine that you’re taking a photo for a new cover or making a poster for the book. It has to be representative of the book in some way, so it can’t just be any random image from the book.
- Try and match the genre/tone of the book. For example, if you’re taking a picture of a forest for a horror novel that’s set in one, don’t take a sunny, happy picture. If you do, edit it to make it gloomy.
- That said, you obviously don’t have to reach professional levels of artistry. It’s about the concept rather than the quality of the image.
- Some notes on concept and accuracy: again, this is for fun not for professional artwork, so if you're unable to capture the details accurately, then try to reproduce a key concept.
For example: you're reading a book about a man and his German Shepherd. Every day, this man takes his dog for a walk on the beach. If you, as a woman, get a picture of yourself walking your Jack Russell on the beach, then that would be ok because you've captured a key image from the story even if the elements are wrong. However, you can't just take a picture of your Jack Russell sitting in the lounge, because it's the wrong dog in many ways, and nothing else about the picture relates to he novel.
Another example: last year I read God Save the Queen, where the main character was a red-head, and her hair colour was actually an important part of who she was - she was half vampire and half human, and half-breeds all had brightly coloured hair. To dress up as this character you would have to get a wig or photoshop your hair. On the other hand, if the character just happens to be a red-head but could be brunette or blonde without changing the story, then your hair colour doesn't matter, but you'd have to find other means of imitating her.
Use this thread to list your books, along with links to each photograph. Looking forward to seeing your pictures!
