Isabel Allende Apopogized For Comments About Mystery Novels on NPR here: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2... In part: "I started reading the most successful ones in the market in 2012. ... And I realized I cannot write that kind of book. It's too gruesome, too violent, too dark; there's no redemption there. And the characters are just awful. Bad people. Very entertaining, but really bad people." What do you think? It certainly stirred up a lot of comments including one bookstore sending all signed copies of her mystery novel back to the publisher.

There are some mysteries that are too dark for me. I just avoid those. There are lots more mystery novels in the sea!

Can't anyone voice their opinion these days? It seems like to me, we've gotten so worried about everyone playing nice that we aren't even allowed to dislike something.
She wasn't bashing anyone (I don't like that, either). Heck, she wasn't even bashing the genre. She just said she didn't like it.
What happened to freedom of speech?

I agree with Lucy and Kelly. My first problem with what Allende said (in The Guardian) was, "I'm not a fan of mysteries." So why write one? You can read the rest of her comments, but the bottom line is her book hasn't received good reviews from even her long-time die hard fans. An "Amazon Vine Review" (most trusted) gave it 1 star saying, "I have been a fan of Allende's all the way back to the beginning....Ripper, I tried, I really did. I read over 200 pages before I finally screamed and threw the book." They do explain why. On the advice of many readers, I'll skip this one.
