Fantasy Book Club discussion

Hi

as requested this is the place for fans of the Malazan books to come together to discuss and reread book 1 - Gardens of the Moon.

I will check in and add the next books as and when you guys want.

Go for it and enjoy.......

I'm interested in this, but what kind of pace is everyone thinking about keeping with these reads? FYI,
I can't start until mid to late march and this will be my first go with this series. I don't want to be a hold up, so just checking in before committing.

Just take your time and then when demand dictates, I will add more threads for the other books. So dont worry, no rush.

If this takes off and we go on to the next book I will Sandra. At the moment not sure if it will.

im on page 112 of gardens of the moon, i really want other people to get on board with this. there isnt much love for malazan on this site as far as i can tell.

talking about pace how is a book a week or a book a month ?

I couldn't commit to more than 1/month especially given the length of each one. I'm only good for about 1500 pages/month and I've a few other reading commitments to work in with this one.

hahaha i'd like to see a hero who could manage malazan book a week. they are heavy brick type things.

However could you say that?

This group already did Malazan, there's another group currently on book 3 or 4 in a series read and I mod a group that's about to move onto Deadhouse Gates.

There's plenty of Malazan love around here. But the books are huge and it's hard for a group to them due to pace.

I agree mrs J which is why I think the buddy read format is great.

I have read about 5 of them and I am a fan but they are big books and complex plots so not for everyone.

Who is your favourite character in bk 1 and why?

Do you enjoy all the violence and wars?

It'll be my first go with the series, so I'll be doing one book per month. I'll start Gardens of the Moon this coming Monday :D

a book a month sounds good then. the books arnt that big these are the kind of books all the time

ok, I am in on this one. a book a month, starting saturday with Gardens of the Moon My first time with this series too

ok bev i think we agree on the 1 book a month. everybody start gardens of the moon on the 1st which is saturday. i hope more people join in with this it should be fun.

Right after WoR, all three Mistborn, Alloy of Law, the first Dresden File book, and The Warded man... So yeah, eventually lol.

Hey guys as i said before i had already started reading gardens of the moon, Im nearly done with chapter 8, And i am starting to remember why i love this series so much. The storyline is starting to build up nicely. I hope everybody has started it and is going to enjoy it. I would like some discussion about the start of the book.

Read almost 50 pages, a little slow. But then epic fantasy takes time to develop....

Im finished, i no its fast but its so great i couldnt put it down.

You are not alone. I had to re-read the first couple of chapters just to be partially lost. I am now through chapter 14 and I'm not as lost since more information has been revealed. But I find that the author's method of telling the story and organizing the book have interfered with what could be a great story set in a fascinating world. Erikson clearly has talent. There are a few parts that are enjoyable to read; unfortunately, there are too many others that are painful.

Surprising considering your aversion to multiple points of view.

yes i know the irony sandra but as i also said ther are some exceptions to the rule and malazan is one of them

the true irony is how all the different POVs are missing some part of the picture, so the reader has better insight than anyone else...

I've not read much fantasy. I've read Brandon Sanderson, Joe Abercrombie and Guy Guvriel Kay in the past. I find first two's way of telling story is very fascinating, but I simply can't compare GGK's lyrical prose and flawless writing to Erikson's.

LOL, not hardly. I gave this series a serious try and just couldn't get into it. It was a labor to read it.

I dont know if its because i came prepared - hearing so much about the complexity of the book even before picking it up - or not, but i simply LOVED the book. I found myself constantly going back, having thought of something in a new light, be it from the story or from the unintelligible poems. it felt so diffrent, having to piece everything by myself, it made for a completely new fantsy-read experience. (I finished it a weak ago - just now found this thread..)

his writing makes it more than complex.....I'm still trying my very best.

It wasn't the complexity that bothered me. I read many books at least as complex or more complex. It was the subject matter and the extreme violence and seeming indifference of the characters to it. I know that many do love it, however, so mine is just one opinion.

just got Deadhouse Gates in the mail!! its a really big book...
when will we get started with that one? i cant wait!!

im hoping we start deadhouse gates at the begining of april, we agreed to try and do 1 a month. Please stick with it brad its very confusing i know but the series is well worth it.

There are only a few days left in march, i hope everyone has nearly finished gardens of the moon because its nearly time for deadhouse gates.

I found this thread, I'm reading Toll the Hounds. It, like the others, is excellent but they are hard going. So much to remember!

I recently only started reading Gardens of the moon and i have some doubts here.What is the actual age of main characters here ? Because after the siege of pale is Tattersail thinks about her life of 219 years in earth??And calot is more than 100 years?? Are they older than Dujek Onearm Who is supposed to be 78 or 79?

But magically enhanced so guess that's why they stay alive.
