You've got me a bit curious: I looked at the list you pointed to and it's dominated by books I wouldn't consider "legit", since they only seem popular with the authors themselves and their friends and sock puppets. Now, I probably wouldn't hesitate to pick up something by David M. Schwartz and Magic School Bus is standard fare of course, but have you read through any of the other titles figured in the first ten spots on this list? I tend to give a lot more weight to anything seconded by a member of this group than I'd give to a Listopia list ... ;-)

Thanks! So, you confirm my suspicions, that the rankings on that list are not very useful. Oh, well, this is the problem with lists that get manipulated by the authors ...
I'm like you in that my tastes often differ from my son's. He'd probably like the Usborne books, he devoured three of the Pocket Genius books last summer. But we both liked Is a Blue Whale ... ?. While the pictures may not be stunning, it's very clever! Thanks for the many pointers. Unfortunately, even the best science books for kids don't always have many ratings, so it can be hard to weed out the spam on these lists ...

Funny! I know that our Natural History Museum does this too. It wouldn't possibly be the same ... ?
Pls. suggest me best books on Cars, technology, machines, planes for 8 year old boy.

This is probably suitable for them as well - George's Secret Key to the Universe. It's a mixture of fiction and hard core science that explains principles such a dark matter.
You may want to show them this one - the solar system drawn to scale:

I found these titles on Amazon. As I don't have children, and am not that interested in cars etc., I don't know wether these titles are good choices, but they look interesting and have generally had good reviews on Amazon (but I take no responsibility as to content or quality).

The entire series looks both fun and informative.

Carolien, thanks for suggesting " George's Secret Key to the Universe", all 3 books in this series seem to be extremely good. Pls. suggest few more.

This would probably be more aimed at a 7 year old and is more maths based, but you can take a look at Loreen Leedy's books.
I just saw this one as a recommended book based on one of my current reads Bomb: The Race to Build—and Steal—the World's Most Dangerous Weapon. Not sure which age group, it may be for slightly older kids.
