Vicki (mattsmama) | 77 comments “The company is actively engaged in discussions with several world-class hardware partners related to device development as well as content packaging and distribution,” Huseby said in a statement. “As a result, we plan to launch a new Nook color device in early fiscal 2015.” The goal is to “reverse the content sales decline.” While Barnes & Noble has been all over the place about its tablet strategy since previous CEO William Lynch’s departure last summer, the launch of a new color device made by a third party would fit with Huseby’s goal of “de-risk[ing] the [Nook] business plan” by decreasing in-house development costs.

In addition, Huseby said, “We expect the soft launch of our higher education digital product before the end of this fiscal year.”

Barnes & Noble broke out Nook’s losses by segment: Device and accessories sales were $100 million for the quarter, down 58.2 percent from a year ago “due to lower unit selling volume and lower average selling prices.” Digital content sales were $57 million, down 26.5 percent from last year. The company attributed these losses in part to the fact that it “did not introduce any new tablet products this past holiday season,” but instead “executed its plan to sell through most of its existing device inventory, while also building additional tablet devices to meet holiday and post-holiday demand, using previously acquired parts and components.”

Huseby, who had been CEO of Nook Media, was appointed CEO of the entire company in January. Prior to that, there had not been one CEO overseeing the entire company since Lynch left in July.

Barnes & Noble’s stock had risen last week based on a proposal from an outfit called G Asset Management to acquire 51 percent of the company. As Publishers Marketplace noted, “This is not an actual bid, or even a formal offer. G Asset appears to have no financing, and SEC records show various G Asset funds having raised only about $3 million over the years.” In the call Wednesday, Huseby said, “We do not consider it to be a proposal worthy of discussion or further action by us.”

This post was updated Wednesday morning with information from the earnings call.

B&N has always had better ereaders than Amazon; it's in the website and customer service that they fail to compete.

message 6: by Nina (new)

Nina (marshnina) | 60 comments I used to think that B&N had the better ereader.....then I got the hd+ and have had nothing BUT problems with it. While reading a book, playing on an app or on a web site the reader shuts off and goes to the home screen. And I am on the 3rd one. I am not happy with hd+ and wish I would not have spent the money. Also think that the customer service should be based in the US and not be outsourced to another country.

message 7: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (mattsmama) | 77 comments I got the Kindle Fire HDX as a gift. It does have some cool features that I like. One is, when looking at the cover of a book on my carousel, it shows me a few suggestions of other books I might like. I do find this to be a handy feature to help me find new authors I may not have heard of otherwise.

message 8: by Nina (new)

Nina (marshnina) | 60 comments I got the kindle fire hd for Christmas and like it. I find that I use my nook to carry to work and I know one day it will stop working all together. The kindle has the carousel and the recommendations and loads of apps

message 9: by Thera (new)

Thera Lewis (thera1) | 124 comments I don't know why people always mention the kindle fire when speaking about nook. Unless you are comparing nook tablet/color/HD, then here is no comparison.
I hated the kindle (not user friendly at all) and absolutely cannot stand reading on a lot screen.

message 10: by NancyMagaly (new)

NancyMagaly | 9 comments This might be a slighlty biased commentary since I LOVE my two nooks (Nook 1st ed and Nook HD+). I agree with Thera in that you should only compare the Kindle Fire to the Nook HD tablet since both have the wifi capabilities. My Nook HD will return to the home screen when I'm on the web at times, but it happens infrequently. I also think the location of the home screen button makes it easier for me to accidentally hit it and return to the main screen. I mainly use my Nook for reading, searching for reading selections, and answering emails. If I'd wanted a true tablet, I would go with an IPad. Most reviews favor Nook for the reading experience (as an Ereader) rather than Kindle and IPad. In having used a friend's kindle, I did not find it user friendly and preferred the Nook's eink and ease of use. The Kindle Fire seemed quicker to resond while on the internet, but performed similarly when downloading and playing apps. I am glad there is a new nook product and hope it receives glowing recommendations, but I do not think it will top Amazon's sales performances. I have found, to my dismay, that the prices for ebooks will sometimes be $1 or so less on Amazon than Barnes and Noble. However, the daily deals and free nook book fridays keeps me happy and content. It would take Barnes and Noble onto a different path that I'm not altogether sure they or I are ready for by trying to outdo Amazon.

Michelle (mgauffant) | 86 comments What frustrates me with the whole Kindle/Nook argument is pricing. Both Google and Amazon have Divergent on sale this week for 4.99, while it's still 9.99 on Nook.
I WANT to buy through B&N but they sure make it impossible when they don't keep their pricing competitive.

I've been having this same problem with my Nook HD. It freezes up, shuts down, and never stays on the page I left on. It always goes back to the cover page. This can become very annoying. I had to go back to my Nook Color which I never had problems with.

I totally agree with this Michelle. I too would rather purchase books on my Nook but like you said they make it impossible. I have a Nook HD+ and have the Kindle App downloaded on it for all of my Kindle books. But I can get very frustrated when I am reading a series and some of the books are on my Nook and then some I have downloaded via Kindle.

Yes!! I'm also following an older series and found the earlier books on the kindle app. I can't even find the paperbacks on B&N.com. So frustrating because I want to give Nook my business, I want to go to B&N and give them my business!

I haven't heard this, but like the previous poster, I want to give B&N my business; I'm heavily invested in their devices :)and it is frustrating and a shame that B&N doesn't do enough to promote their Nook, which can be a great product.

Amazon's Kindle is taking over the market, not to mention many book related sites! Just to give an example of how they're taking over is I have been waiting forever to get the electronic copy of one of my favorite books of all time, A Woman of Substance, by Barbara Taylor Bradford. Imagine my excitement when the author's website sent me an email saying it's finally available for download in the U.S.; I click on the link and it takes me to the Amazon site! B&N still doesn't offer it on their site. Luckily, I have the kindle app on my NookHD+, but I'd rather read and manage a copy from B&N.

I wish B&N luck I love their brick and mortar stores, but I'm very disappointed in their lack of competitiveness.

David (batedavegmailcom) | 14 comments I feel much the same way. Back when I bought my first e-reader, I spent a lot of time comparing the Kindle and the Nook and finally decided on the Nook based on reviews and the fact that I had been buying paperbacks from B&N for years and was always happy with them. Had I known then what I know now, I likely would have opted for the Kindle. Like you, I see many book advertised for discount prices or even free only to find out they are for Kindle only. If Amazon does buy B&N, my hope is that they will release software that will allow Kindle books to be read on a Nook or else provide a way to convert the Nook books to Kindle format.

At present if you own a NookHD/HD+ you do have access to the google play store and can download the kindle app. However, to have them fully intergrated would be a plus.

Just buy it on Amazon, and use Calibre to convert it to epub and you can read it on the Nook.

Yes. Although it's pretty trivial to do. I'm not giving out instructions, but I certainly consider it moral to do. If you legally purchased a book, you can do with it as you wish. Imagine if you bought a physical book and they said you can read it on MWF, but not TR? That would be ridiculous. So is DRM. AS LONG AS YOU LEGALLY BUY IT.

message 24: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Conn (cmconn) | 135 comments I hope they continue to focus on the reader. It's a great reader and people who want tablet features can buy a tablet or a phone.

B&N is in the business of selling books, in whatever form. That's why we go to them.

message 25: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Conn (cmconn) | 135 comments I have a nook HD and can read google or kindle books with it using the google play apps. There is no reason to convert them.

Can kindle readers do that with all 3 formats? I hear a lot about how great they are but it looks they can only read one proprietary format (maybe I'm wrong).

From what I know, most of that revolves around the fact that Kindles don't handle epub - which is dumb. It'd be as if iPods didn't do MP3, only AAC. EPUB is like JPEG or any other standard format. AZW - Amazon's wrapper around Mobipocket (although recently it is EPUB-like) - is only for Amazon.

YES! I also think you should be able to lend it more than once via Nook Friends. I do understand that a paper book will eventually wear out and that an ebook won't but I purchased the book so I should be able to lend it to more than one friend.

I also prefer the way the Kindle can load non-Amazon purchased documents. Amazon provides an email address for your Kindle so I can just email a converted book directly to his device. Thank you Calibre for making sideloading to my Nook easier.

message 29: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mgauffant) | 86 comments Gosh I know I mentioned this before, but here's another frustrating example of price differences:
I wanted to purchase the final book in the Divergent series on my Nook; it's 11.99. It's $6.99 on both google play and Amazon, while it's 9.99 on kobo.
B&N is the MOST expensive ebook. How on earth can we stay competitive with such high prices?!! So annoying.
End rant! lol

It's definitely a toughie - because I want competition both to keep Amazon from making everything proprietary (instead of the standard EPUB format) and also so they innovate in their e-ink devices and MAYBE get us some color, non-tablet readers. But we also don't have infinite money. So you can always buy it on Kindle if it's cheaper there and, if you have one of the tablets, use the Kindle for Android, or use Calibre or some other method to strip the DRM and convert it to EPUB so you can read it on your book.

Nina, I also have the HD and play several games on it, have tons of books, I do everything on it and have not had one issue - I'm sorry that you have had problems.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments If B&N come out with a new tablet/ereader this year, I do see myself getting it - I love my Nook. They are also have a sale on the Nook glowlight for $99.00 - and I am seriously thinking of getting it this weekend.

Bite you tongue David! I don't want Amazon to purchase B&N!!! That would be the worst mistake ever!!!

message 34: by David (new)

David (batedavegmailcom) | 14 comments Linda, I have a Glowlight and it is a nice reader. Mine is an older model that still has the slot for a mini disk, so there is a lot more space for saving books that are sideloaded. As to the Amazon thing, I have not heard anything on that since that one piece and I suspect it was simply another rumor.

message 35: by Karen (new)

Karen (2noelle) Here's the press release link http://www.barnesandnobleinc.com/pres...

I'm not really excited about this merger, because I'm not buying another B&N product since I have both the NC, ST, and the HD+. I only use the ST and HD+ for different things, thinking about selling the NC.

I love my Nooks, but B&N's customer service hasn't won me over, especially with their tech support.

message 36: by Jean (new)

Jean French (jfrench55) | 82 comments I'm not excited about the new model either. I have an iPad so I'm not interested in a tablet. I have the Glowlight which I love. I expecially like the lightness of it since I usually read in bed. The one thing I would really like to see is a better way to sort my shelves.

message 37: by Nina (new)

Nina (marshnina) | 60 comments I had nothing but problems with the nook hd+ and bought an iPad. I can read my nook books and also kindle books. I am also not happy with b&n in their customer service. They have outsourced their cs to the Philippines and it's difficult to explain a problem to someone who repeats everything I say. I am not interested in the b&n tablets or who they have making their tablets. I have been very disappointed with b&n.

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 75 comments I got the nook classic for my birthday two years ago and the Kindle Fire HD last year, also as a birthday gift. For obvious reasons, I prefer the Fire HD now but my old black and white nook and I had great adventures together.

Now, my mom uses it. :)

(And I also have an iPad 2.)

message 42: by Thera (new)

Thera Lewis (thera1) | 124 comments If it's not e-ink, I am absolutely NOT INTERESTED. I just want to read. I don't want a tablet. If they release a new READING device with e-ink, I'm all over it.
If not, then NOPE.

message 43: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 167 comments I guess we all have our preference.

Was sold on the tablet and I like it a lot.

message 44: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (nica21) | 5 comments Those that bought the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook, will you please post your thoughts after using it? It looks great, but I'm wary to getting new when I've become so used to my Nook HD.

I do love Samsung, though, and utilize the Samsung Galaxy S3 phone. I'm just interested in how the new tablet works, especially compared to the HD.

Thanks in advance! <3

message 45: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 167 comments So far I like it. I also have the Nook HD. But so far I like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 better. That may be because I have the Samsung S5 phone and each device is compatible to each other.

message 46: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (nica21) | 5 comments Thank you Veronica!

I was hoping that was the case, so that it wouldn't be a complete unknown if I got it. I appreciate you sharing.

message 47: by Kendra (new)

Kendra (kendradtravers) | 152 comments I have the Nook HD+ and the new Samsung Nook Tab 4, it is also compatible with my Samsung Note 3, and I love it. My only complaint is the screen size.

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 75 comments I bought it the day it was released. Basically, it is a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 with the nook app. *shrug* I don't have any of the Nook tablets (I switched to Kindle Fire HD after the first generation nook, which is now my mother's) so I cannot compare them to the others.

Right now, my only complaint is the 8gig built-in memory. That sounds like a lot but 5gig is used to run the device, leaving 3gig for books, audio, video, apps, and whatnot. When I synched my Samsung account (I have an S3 phone) to the SGT4N, I had to delete a lot of apps because with everything synched, it left me with 1gig for books, etc. And if you download (not stream) the TV shows, that will not leave you with anything. So if you plan on getting this device, make sure you get a micro SD card for extra memory space.

But I like that it's sleek and powerful. I'm using it right now to watch Youtube/DirecTV/Starz and some Pandora while I'm waiting for my micro SD card.

I made a case for it already!

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments I'm on the fence, I currently have the Nook HD which I love, but I can't decide if I want to get the Samsung Nook Tab and now after reading Cate's post, this new "Nook" is really just an app??? Is that true??? I'm not sure that I want a Nook app, I would prefer a new Nook, not that I need a new Nook. LOL!!! I think I should go to B&N and check it out in person - but I would appreciate any thoughts anyone would like to share.

message 50: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 167 comments Its not just an app. The Nook app on my Galaxy S5 is just that an app. The Tablet reminds me of the Nook Color. The library, shop, wishlist, Nook today, etc. There is also a specialized widget for your Nook. Its actually a Galaxy Tab dedicated to the Nook. I liked the Nook Color more than the HD.
