Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments Several times a year we participate in group readathons. This topic thread will be used for information about upcoming readathons, as well as discussion during events.

message 2: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I think it's about time for our first readathon of the year! (These are completely optional, so if you don't want to participate, don't sweat it. If you DO want to but can't this time, don't worry, there's always next time!)

I thought with spring approaching and nice weather on the horizon (or at least we can hope...) why not take the last weekend of winter to stay inside and read?

The event will be next weekend, March 14-16. This isn't a 72-hour read-till-you-drop kind of thing, but it IS a way to take a couple days to push ahead on your yearly goal, knowing that others are doing the same thing.

If you plan to participate, post here with your goals for the weekend -- a certain amount of time spent reading, or a page count you're aiming for, or the book(s) you want to get through by the time the weekend is over.

Happy reading!

Ooh yay! Time to put together a list!

Kerry *Pale Daughter* | 38 comments Yay! I have several trilogies I'd like to finish. It will be a good time to start!

message 5: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments I'm in! Currently I'm in the middle of quite a few books. I'd like to finish at least two of these, more would certainly be a bonus: A Discovery of Witches, A Beautiful Blue Death, Burial Rites, The All-Girls Filling Station's Last Reunion, and Mrs. Lincoln's Rival (reviewer copy).

message 6: by Lori (new)

Lori Yea I'm off next weekend!! I'm not sure what my goal will be but I will plan it this week.

message 8: by Dawn Michelle (new)

Dawn Michelle | 3487 comments I think I can be in. I have the whole weekend to read since I am off Facebook for Lent. :-) I will make a list. YAY!!

message 9: by Gaijinmama (new)

Gaijinmama | 13 comments I'm in Japan, so my time zone is different from most of you, but I'd like to give this a try.
I think I'll set a page number goal, rather than try to force myself to decide what to read.

message 10: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I'm glad to see such a great response already! I was a little worried about the late notice and not running a poll to see what days work best for people.

I'm not sure what my goals will be, it depends on where I am heading into the weekend.

message 11: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Griffith (lizkat01) This sounds like fun! I will have to figure out what to read because I will probably finish the two books I'm reading now by the weekend. I guess a list is in order...

I've decided to read solely from my physical bookshelf this Readathon. Now to choose which ones and how many! And if I want to dig in bins or just go with books actually on a bookshelf. Hmm!

message 14: by Gaijinmama (last edited Mar 12, 2014 05:25PM) (new)

Gaijinmama | 13 comments OK. My goal is to read 300 pages in three days, starting Friday morning. At the very least, that will get me through the last part of A Game of Thrones which I'm finally reading and am having a really hard time putting down anyway!!

message 15: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Griffith (lizkat01) I think I am going to start on The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer or The Maze Runner. Mainly my goal for this weekend is to get further ahead in my annual goal. I am currently 5 books ahead on my goal, which I have been a few times in the past. I would like to be 7 or 8 books ahead. I also have a list of books I want to read before seeing their movie versions, and this weekend will be a nice time to attack that list.

message 16: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I want to start and finish at least one of my Stephen King books out from the library. Finishing one and starting a second would be even better, but we'll see what kind of time I get to myself this weekend.

message 17: by Dawn Michelle (new)

Dawn Michelle | 3487 comments I am going to try and finish the two books I am reading now and hopefully a third one as well. :-)

message 18: by Gaijinmama (new)

Gaijinmama | 13 comments Good morning from Tokyo!
I am now officially shutting down my computer for awhile. Time to read! Think I'll start with the nonfiction.

message 20: by Lori (new)

Lori My goal will be to read 3 books, I have 3 library books currently sitting on my bedside table.

message 21: by Gaijinmama (new)

Gaijinmama | 13 comments Quick check-in before making dinner...74 pages so far.
226 to go!

Kerry *Pale Daughter* | 38 comments OMG, it's readathon day! My goals are now more specific - finish Unspoken, read Untold, and if possible, start another book in the pile beside my bed. Better get started.....:)

message 23: by Dawn Michelle (new)

Dawn Michelle | 3487 comments YAY YAY YAY!!!! Its the start of READ - A - THON!!!!!
YAY YAY YAY!!! A whole weekend of nothing but reading!!! I am going to try and read while working. Its a busy day so I may not get started until after 5pm. But I sure am going to try!!!! YAY!!!!!

Home from work and settling in for the Readathon! Putting my e-book (kinda boring anyways) and audiobook (for my work commute) on hold for the weekend to complete my mission of reading...let's say 3-4 physical books from my bookcase. Randomly pulled Yeah, I Said It by Wanda Sykes. Onward and readward! :) Good luck everybody!

message 25: by Dawn Michelle (new)

Dawn Michelle | 3487 comments You know that moment when ALL you want to do is read and EVERYTHING else gets in the way and you CANNOT start reading when you want to? Yep. That is me right now.
ARRRRRGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

message 26: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments Ugh, Dawn Michelle, that sucks! But there is still a whole weekend a head of us!

I'm about 100 pages into Carrie. Hoping to get a little bit more in before bed, but even if I don't that's not bad for a first day.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 8838 comments Mod
Oh no, Dawn! Hope you finally got to read! Sucks when stuff gets in the way.

I just finished Yeah, I Said It. 247 pages down. Next I'm going to read A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb.
I decided to dig out my Goodreads First Reads books and get reading and reviewing so as to up my chances on winning more. I've won 6 over the past year and a half and have only read and reviewed 2, which were crappy books. :/ So hopefully 1 or 2 of those will be after A Certain Slant of Light.

message 28: by Dawn Michelle (new)

Dawn Michelle | 3487 comments YAY!!!
I got about 50 pages in while updating my mom's iPad. I am so not sleepy so am going to try for 50 more tonight [it is 12:20am here in NW PA]. And tomorrow it is all books. all the time. :-)

Elyse, I hate when you are excited to read a book and it is crappy. And THEN you have to review it. UGH. I have never won one here. It would be cool.

Kerry *Pale Daughter* | 38 comments I finished my first goal late last night. On to my second! I'm staying in my PJ's today and I'm not answering the doorbell!

message 30: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 336 comments Yesterday I started Let them Eat Fruitcake and finished it this morning. The plan is to finish reading Skinny Bitch and read at least 300 pages of When Christ and His Saints Sletp.

message 31: by Lori (new)

Lori I only managed to read for about an hour yesterday so not much progress made so far. I hope to do better today.

message 32: by Karol (new)

Karol | 221 comments I'm glad to see so many taking part . . . I have to pass this time. I am getting married this weekend! (So I'm just a little busy). Best wishes to all for some great reading this weekend.

Hi everyone! I'm sorry I have been MIA. My feelings got hurt in one of my other groups and because of that I took a step back from Goodreads all together. In retrospect I should have just dealt with that issue and gone on with my favorite groups like 75. So I'm here and ready to get started again but I wanted to apologize first. I'm looking forward to the readathon and catching up with all of you! I'm on my way to RI for my father in laws birthday but I'll try to check in tonight.

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments No worries, Andrea. I took a similar step back toward the end of last year. Sometimes we just need to get some distance.

Thanks for understanding :)

It's hard when you feel like you we're let down by people that you thought were friend.

I'm over it though and ready to pick up my first book of the year!

Welcome back, Andrea!

I just finished A Certain Slant of Light at 282 pages. So now I'm up to 2 physical books and 529 pages read. Next up is the Goodreads First Reads book I've had the longest of the 4, Shards of Time by Seth Scharon. Looks odd. Lol.

message 42: by Dawn Michelle (new)

Dawn Michelle | 3487 comments Oooo!! Can't wait to hear how you like THAT one Elyse!!! :-)

I am in the final stretch of "Gracefully Insane" and will be heading into the second Divergent book later tonight. I am dreading it because I disliked the first one so much. But I am committed to reading it and I really want to find out what happens. If only the writing were better...Hunger Games totally spoiled me.

message 43: by Gaijinmama (new)

Gaijinmama | 13 comments I actually did manage to read about 100 pages yesterday, which means if I do the same today I'll reach my goal of 300 pages and finish A Game of Thrones (which really should come with a warning, as it is near impossible to put down and I don't think I'll be able to resist starting the next book in the series immediately!)

Kerry *Pale Daughter* | 38 comments I read about 115 pages yesterday which is a little less than I expected. I hope to finish Untold today to reach my goal, but if something turns up and I can't, tomorrow would be nice.

message 45: by Lori (new)

Lori I have managed to get to the half way point in 2 of my books. I would like to finish both of them today, and if I can stay awake I should be able to do that.

message 46: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 336 comments So I was sidetracked when I went to the library and picked-up Bossy Pants by Tina Fey. I did finish it (YAY!) and plan on getting through at least 30 page of When Christ and His Saints Slept before having to make dinner and watching The Walking Dead.

Gaijinmama, good luck to you! I couldn't resist myself. The only time I would put those books down was when something totally unexpected happened (like the red wedding) and had to process and mourn.

message 47: by Lori (new)

Lori Just finished A Cookbook Conspiracy! At the 55% point in The Barkeep.

Today has been a day of movie-watching, eating, napping, and a little reading. I've had a nasty migraine most of the day so it was hard to concentrate. I just finished Shards of Time which was pretty painful. At 249 pages, I'm up to 3 physical books and 778 pages read. Going to continue I Capture the Castle now, my e-book, but I'm not expecting to read too much more tonight. Probably going to bed soon. My goal was 3-4 physical books so I done good! :) Hope everyone else had an accomplished Readathon!

message 49: by Dawn Michelle (new)

Dawn Michelle | 3487 comments I have been totally distracted by a free weekend and have accomplished quite a bit, but not much of it was reading. Will finish the one book shortly and will get going on the second, but alas, 3 books will NOT get read this time. :-( I did have a great weekend though nonetheless.

Elyse, I hope your migraine goes away quickly. Those are just awful and I really feel for you!!!

I admire ANYONE who can read Game of Thrones. I could not. Ever.

message 50: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Griffith (lizkat01) I haven't been able to spend nearly the time reading this weekend that I was hoping to, but I have managed to read the prequel (very short) to the Lunar Chronicles (Glitches) and finish my Patricia Cornwell book. I still have a few hours left of the weekend, so I'm hoping to at least get a good start on Cinder.
