Tonya | 1 comments I remember the story is about a widowed English lady whose husband's death is under suspicion and seeks the help of a detective. It takes place in the late 1880's. The detective is a secretive man that turns out being related to Gypsies. And I believe the lady finds out after the husband dies that he was gay. The detective and the lady develop a relationship.

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) When was it likely written? Modern or circa? I can give you a list of all the famous mystery novels published that era; but if this is a modern book I have no answer.

Abigail's suggestion of Silent in the Grave looks very promising. Amazon's Look Inside preview turned up: detective has Gypsy blood, the widow discovers her husband was gay, and her husband collapses during a party they're hosting (at the beginning of the story).
